A bit bleary eyed, but is that 4K or 4M? Depends on whether it is a period or comma...
I thought only officers were paid in gold. The location seems very specific.

All out of Pottstown stories?

Best wishes for 2020 to you!

This is the HMS Hussar. The East River was blown to bits to open up the Hell Gate passageway in 1876. There's not much hell left in the gate.

the currents there are vicious and the boat traffic is nuts at times

Simon lake actually built a submarine that he was gonna use to salvage the Hussar. i have a framed stock certificate from the "Simon Lake Torpedo Boat Company"

You can see Pot Rock in the middle of the mouth of the East River on this chart.

Nice chart, BL. To be clear, she was damaged on Pot Rock, but she foundered in Brother's Bay.

Here is a 1852 newspaper story that originated from the New York herald.

Here is a plan of the ship. She was the same design as HMS Mermaid.

I dove the supposed site with Rob McClung of Whydah fame and another buddy next to Riker's Island. We didn't find anything and the visibility and currents are very nasty.
