Todd & me were itching to get out since the snow fell & today seemed like the perfect day to do it.warm temps snow melting and praying the whole ride that it wasn't too deep where we were heading.
Got there at 8am foggy, snowy but warm.looked like about 2-3 inches of snow in the woods.not too bad we been out in deeper stuff last year.
Found the site after about a 1/2 mile hike in.looked like an early center chimney cellar hole with a starter home or older cellar hole nearby.targets were tough going at 1st but later in the day our coils heated up.i got some buttons here n there.had a nice solid 92 VDI thinkin silver i dig a solid square of lead . one cool find and wish it wasn't busted is a monogramed letter "G" or "C" on a broken crotal bell piece.
later on i dug a nice complete shoe buckle.so towards the end of the day i get a nice coin reading.i call todd over to check the signal, he's like yeah dude that's a copper.so, dig down and flip the shovel of dirt out and see the disc but under the coin is another one.2 KGII's in the same shovel full. i fill in the plug .stand up swing to check.like 4 inches over i get another signal,i'm like todd i think theres another one.so I open up the hole pin point and see a smaller coin in the hole.pick it up and see another one still in the hole.another small copper.4 coins all holed.2 are smaller KGII half farthing? and the worn French coin is a Liard de France 1643 to 1715 should be enough on obverse to to confirm that I think. the 1749 half farthing is in awesome shape!
Todd is swinging like 5 feet over from my pocket spill and he gets a 3 copper pocket spill!

so while cleaning my finds and get to the square lead block running water over it.i'm like what the hell? only thing i can figure is it's a hand made lead ink well? has some stuff carved into sides DDD?
was a fun hunt.
we both ended up with 4 coppers each.we both got shoe buckles. funny how on most hunts we match each others finds. great to go home knowing we both had a great day detecting.

Great finds. That farthing is in great shape! Are the French coins prevalent around there?

Beautiful finds, nice coppers. I believe that is an inkwell. Pretty neat!

Incredible finds! Congrats

thanks! nah i've only dug 2 colonial french coins opposed to all the english, spanish, and US colonials.the other french coin i dug was a 1722 denier

super finds. love the shoe buckle

That ink well is the coolest thing.

Unbelievable amount of colonial relics/coins on a day such as that ! I love the pics with the snow and the woods AWESOME !

it amazes me how many old coins have holes in them. was it mandatory to wear necklaces then?

I don't think they were necklaces. People didn't use pockets as much, and I think coins were often kept on a ring.

I believe they were also tied together with string.

appreciate the info dude

Sure. I hope I gave you correct info. Someone else will chime in.

Great group of finds. Amazing how quickly the weather can change. 5 degrees with 2 feet of snow to 60 and just a few inches of snow in the same week. Hopefully everyone will be getting out soon.

Awesome hunt HMN, those are the kinds of hunts that you remember till the day you die. That ink well really rocks, I would liove to find one like that, great recovery. Maybe the DDD means the owner left it there for DeepDiggerDan,:laughing7:. All kidding aside the initials really gives it a personal touch.
Congrats and I hope you get a chance to hit that site again soon.

What incredible finds! You have most certainly made it worth your while hunting in the snow. Thanks for your pics. I have only found field coppers, so I really like seeing what a nice colonial copper looks like.

Amen brother! It was 64 degrees F on my way home tonight at 5 pm. It is supposed to turn cold again, but after a great rain and the warm temp, I may just have to give a Christmas afternoon hunt a try. Shouldn't be frozen too deep ( I hope ). Merry Christmas to you all.

Wow! Fantastic hunt with great results!! People were poor so many of there clothes had holes especially the pockets. Holed their coins and put them on strings around their neck for safe keeping
