Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
My company sent me to Okinawa for a 2 year contract, and I've been hitting some beaches around here when time permits.

Tonight my wife and I decided to hit one that isn't too far from the house, and we stayed for about 2.5 hours. She focused on the dry sand, and I took the wet.

The yen count wasn't that much... about 1,500 ($18.29) but while hunting the wet sand around the high tide line, I find 2 rings within 4' of one another. Not only that, but when the wife took a break and came to check on me, she pulled out 2 rings that she found at the volleyball court. Her rings appear to be fresh drops, but mine need some cleaning up.

Oh... and my Infinium added about 5 more bobbypins to the collection too.

congrats, nice finds.... just curious , do you ever see any japanese people detecting... its kinda funny how years ago japan was the electronics leaders of the world but i dont recall anydetectors were being manufactured there.. happy huntin...

u had a heck of a great spin also.

u need to spend more time there............ :icon_pirat:

I wish these were gold, but as it turns out, they're all siver. I'm not complaining, but I'll find a gold ring before I leave this island. It seems that most Japanese wear silver, but since there's a lot of military people here, I'm fairly confident that the gold isn't far behind.

I dug a silver necklace the day before, so my jewelry count is coming up. I'm just holding out for that "Big" one.

What's extremely odd is that you don't see a lot of people swinging a detector. Actually, I know of about 5 people that do... and the 2 Japanese people that I've heard of that do it just use their machine to supplement their income a bit. The others are either Americans that live here or are military guys.

I find that hunting at night is your best bet. This almost eliminates the chance encounter with a local, and the frusterating game of charades trying to explain what you're doing. My buddy who lives here and hunts with me explained it best....
"The only time most Okinawans see a metal detector is when the bomb squad is looking for unexploded ordinance left over from WW2".... and trust me... I read enough about that in the paper to know it's true. LOTS of bombs left over. Fortunately, there's not many bombs on the beaches  I have, however, dug a couple pieces of fragments. Nice collectors pieces as far as I'm concerned.

Congrats on the recoveries :icon_thumright: HH BS

I only wish that when I was stationed in Japan that I knew about this great hobby. You will have a great time there, as far as the Japanese people detecting probably very few. You should really do well detecting the beaches in and out of the water. Yes you will have military bubbas to compete with but nothing compared to competition on the beaches like here in Florida. I know there was a post from someone awhile back about going through caves and jungle areas on the island there and recovering WWII items and also helping out local officials when finding remains of Japanese soldiers. Again as you know there will be unexploded ordinance if you decide to go that route so digging with a knife / shovel should be done with extreme caution. :BangHead:
Oh before I forget, the Japanese do wear platinum jewelry as this is considered high class items. Good luck and keep us posted

sounds like allot of unhunted territory...........hunt it hard!!!!!!!!!!!! :icon_thumright:

Silver rings are still rings and $18 in change is not too shabby. With that amount of change, there is a good chance the beach has not been hunted in a long time. Your quest for gold may be satisfied soon. Good luck to you and your wife. Ralph

Very nice rings, great hunt. HH
