$4000 OFFERED for the WATCH

I put the watch on Craigslist in Toronto and same day, had a guy that wanted to come up and buy it for $4000 which was tempting but I am not in any rush, so I will take it stateside with me for the winter and spread the word around the many big resorts where we stay. His excuse for not going any higher is that it did not have any paper work or the box for it, which made me think he probably had a buyer he wanted to resell it to. Not having the credentials for it, may reduce the value somewhat, but I can't see it being a major issue if someone wants a Rolex in mint condition just to wear for show. Anyhow, I'll try some different venues and see what comes up, in the meantime if any of you know of any good sites other than e-bay to list it on, please let me know. I have a nice Pierre Laurent of Paris gold watch that my wife bought me, so that's why I am not keeping it for myself. The company does not offer a finders fee as someone thought they might, and they were very reluctant to give any info on the original purchaser, at least that's how they operate up here. Ya! I know $4000 ain't nothing to sneeze at for some thing that I lucked into but then this song by the King, keeps popping into my head " Fools Rush In " .

You can take this watch to an autherized Rolex dealer, they can contact rolex and do a search for the orginal owner, the company does not like disclosing info to the general public. From what i have heard all rolex`s have a serial # hidden that can be researched to find the orginal owner and if any sub owners have recorded ownership changes it is also recorded.
Again it has to be an autherized rolex dealer.
But it gets tricky, if the peraon that lost that watch had it registered with rolex, and insured with a outside insurance company, once you research it and if by chance you find the person that lost it. If they had it insured and the insurance company paid off on it, you will have to deal with the insurance company.
As far as Ebay goes, you have a reputable dealer, perferrable a name well known thoughout the jewerly industry, appraise it. That gives you and your sale legitimacy, remember ther are alot of knockoffs, copies, floating around ebay. Using a jewerly dealer, rolex dealer/repair, that is nationally known, helps immensely. People are more willing to take the word of a jewerly chain store that has many branch offices nation wide then the local only known in perhaps one town type of appraisial.
There are many websites that are high quality watch resellers, getting in touch with them perhaps might assist you in your sale. Most have walk-in stores also, so perhaps if one is in your area you could visit them, discuss the sale of your watch. Many operate like sothby`s or those fine antique auction houses but only for high end jewerly/watches.
Craigs is great, but from my dealings using craigs list is more designed for lower end items ment for quick cheap sales without any seller fees.

I'd definitely take it state side if nothing else you can get make some $ on the exchange rate. I would also check out some higher end auction houses. Their cut varies so ask plenty of question before doing this. The guy who offered you $4,000 was a resale for sure. I was in the antique buy/sell biz for a while and He probably had quoted a price to somebody for @ $6,000. I used to start with an offer of 1/3 to 1/2 of what I could sell a piece for and negotiate from there. You are coming up on a good time to sell Christmas buying season starts soon. If you don't get the $ you want a few weeks before Valentines day is a good also. May/June is the final go @ graduation/wedding season. Keep us posted as to what happens.

That's a great watch, congratulations! I do have a question on selling it, though. What happens if the person that buys it sends it in for repair? Will Rolex (or whomever does the repair for Rolex) notify the original owner?

Also, "Fools Rush In" was done by Ricky Nelson, not Elvis.

I am not sure what the criteria is for the banner, but usually if its old, rare, interesting, or worth lots of $$$ it makes it. Maybe Marc or Jeff will pop in here and explain or someone else might know.

My self i would sell it for the best price i could get......And would not worry about the serial number or any one checking on the number. ......Why would any one check the number or even look at it ?.. To many worry warts don't become one your self . Sell to the best price ..........==Jim_K==
