I started detecting last summer at a fur trade site. Recently I've become aware of a much older (even larger) site a few miles away. My digging buddy & I have went there 5 times. We pool all our finds then draft one by one. These pics are just my share after washing under water. We have a pact not to pillage this site on our own so my progress has been slow. Note to buddy who I know will be reading this: Better not be busy next week! I don't want wifey excuses! Your married to artifacts now! And don't tell her I said that!
I tossed a couple of these things & traded the broken hooked point to buddy. They are in order of 1st trip, 2nd trip etc. The old copper complex awl was part of the "root through a buckle" haul although it wasn't included since it was so coated in patina, I mistook it for an iron nail & tossed it in vinegar overnight. Oops.

Nice site.
Good ground was often used by different groups for a long time.
It looks like you have later1800's European items on top of older Native American village items.
Possible midden or trash pit.
I'd bet there is a spring or some other fresh water source close.
I even see what looks like a 1940's 30 cal bullet

You are very right gator on all accounts. It's a very beautiful, but isolated area. There are literally dozens of middens stretching at least a quarter mile. Me & buddy might be old men before we clear it.

Take your time .. This is just my 2 cents but I would try to be gentle and respectful of the area plenty of items will come your way best of luck to you

Understood. I personally only end up digging a shallow grave size pit each time & we are trying to do a grid pattern & take up each time were we left off. Like I said... gonna take awhile. We also fill & pack the soil. It's barely noticeable anyone was there. Once leaves fall it will be completely unnoticeable.

Try searching the water.. Whether it be the shoreline where material has gathered or gravel bars or my personal favorite moving material into a sifting screen.
There's probably more in the water then you will ever really need and it will also leave an archaeological site that's still in context in one piece.
This is just me but I've always been a water hunter and never a fan of digging up items still in context

That site would be addictive to me with all the pottery not to mention everything else. Looks like you and your friend will have your own museum before it's all said and done, that's what the local archeologist said to me anyway after he saw some of my stuff. My area as far as we know has never been documented and everything I find tells a story about the people who once lived here same as your site, it's fascinating.

Look at the beautiful pottery. Thanks for sharing.

Did I miss the pics again?

Is that a WWI Army pant button in the middle of the 3rd photo?

No. It's from a department store founded in Paris,1838. Au bon marche. However the company still exist today with multiple stores so I really don't know its age. Thanks for your interest. No worries rock. I should have more posts before stupid, useless winter comes.

Some great looking finds! Get it while you can. In my area one day trees the next day homes. My area in S.C a known historic Catawaba Indian village site was just bull dozed through for a new sub-division owned by Duck Power. Bull dozed over some graves then set aside a very very very tiny portion and replanted trees. When progress approaches Indians sites want stop it. At least in my area.

To be honest, I'm sure we'll get our fill before too long & move on leaving most of the site. I have a short attention span & too many hobbies. Poison oak sucks too.

Nice digging. Like the archaic piece you have there :)
