5" x 10" DD Coil, 18.75 khz, Looking for comments

When buying my XTerra 70, a 5" x 10" DD 18.75 khz coil was included in the summer special. I haven't used it much yet, and wonder exactly what types of hunting this particular coil is best used for.

Any comments from folks who use it would be appreciated cuz right now it's just gathering dust till I learn more about it.

I received my 5X10 coil yesterday for my xterra 50. I, too, haven't used it yet just because I haven't been out. I may try it tomorrow in my back yard were I recently used my 9" standard coil to see if I get different readings.

I have used it and it is hot on small targets but it also gets good separation and good coverage. In fact I fould a small piece of lead that just might be an old type of muzzle shot. I jus got the 10.5 DD and will give it a good test tomorrow as I am off all day.

Hey Farmercal: How's the 10.5DD working for you?? How does it compare in performance to the 5x10DD?

The 10.5 DD coil is heavier than the standard coil, natch, but covers much more ground cubic inches per sweep. The signal is hot down it's center front to back and can be moved into difficult areas to snipe between targets. Practice pinpointing with it as I find it to locate the target just off the tip the easiest. I find a slight difference in depth with the 10.5 DD over the 5X10DD. Sometimes one inch is all you need............

I had the 5x10 and didn't care for it. I got a heck of a lot more depth out of the 18.75 round coil. Also I didn't care for the clamshell design and this coil is more noisy then the 9 incher. Might be a good coil for the beach but I never tried it there.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Just need to give it a try and see how it compares to the stock coil first before buying anymore :-\

I only got to try it out at a couple of site so far. The weight is negligible to me. It works just fine and I like the area you can cover with it due to the unique detecting path. I dug a broach pretty deep. Unfortunately the house I was detecting around has a lot of junk so I found liquor bottle screw caps all over. I did find a couple of quarters but nothing deep at this site. Of course I have never found anything deep at this site. In fact it was this same house that gave up a 1909 penny at 2 inches. Try to figure that one out. I will use the 10.5 or the 5 x 10 on that detector from now on as I feel good about those coils.

I have been considering the x-terra 70, too and the 5x10 coil comes with it. I have been wandering its worth as I hear the full round 10" DD is top notch. So I guess I wonder where this 5x10 DD would fit in???
