5x8 DD vs 4.5 super sniper

Looking for similar for a White's machine and this is what I have been told by those in the know
The really small coil will provide a very tight knife blade field that works well in mineralized soil and provide very good target separation. The draw back is you will lose a few inches of depth. The bigger 5x8 coils will give you better separation than the round coils and help maintain the depth. Seem that the longer the back side of the DD is the deeper it will go (bigger coils go deeper) but since it is a DD the field is still a sharp line down the center where the DD meet.
Tiny coils good fro getting under metal objects and really trashy sites. Bigger DD little less so in the tight spaces and still good separation.. So that is what I believe is true, which one to buy would be dictated by where you plan to use it.
If you have not read this it will be helpful to do so. Garrett's Searchcoil Tech Sheet | How Searchcoils Work
Hope that is somewhat helpful.

I was wondering if anyone can shed light on the differences between the two coils. I want to get a smaller coil for my AT PRO I just don't know which one to get.

Not sure about the coils available for the AT Pro, but I have a Minelab Safari and just picked up the 5" Excelerator coil. What a defference it made in trashy areas and made the pinpoint outstanding in a hole. As far as I know, the 5x8 just gives you a little more of a sweeping path, were the 5" may give you just a hair more depth. Hope this helps. HH

The main difference is that the 4.5" coil can get a little closer to metal fences and playground posts. You will lose a little depth. I believe the 4.5 " is concentric, versus the DD on the 5X8. If you hunt a lot of playgrounds or around very trashy picnic sites, the 4.5 might excel in those spots. For a more general search area, the 5X8 goes deeper and separates quite well.

I have the 4.5 inch Super Sniper for my AT PRO and LOVE IT!

Airscapes, I beg to differ with one of your statements. The elliptical DD coils such as the 5X8 are not deeper on the long end. In face, their depth potential is related to the small dimension so 5X8 coils depth should be somewhere around 5 to 6 inches rather than the 8" length dimension. That's about the depth range one might expect from the 4.5 to 5" concentric coils although in mild soil the concentic design tends to be a bit deeper size for size.

That a great post right there !
Us old timers know this to be true a tad deeper at the point of the cone size for size.
The Manufactures lead some astray by their ADDs about the DD coil is deeper when it is just usually a bigger size coil.

Well, here's my answer based on hunting since the '70s. I only use the 9.5" coil that came with my XLT. I hunt from cache to trash with it. Even used it in some colonial dumps. It is a concentric coil that pinpoints exactly. I can detect a ring next to a nail and have done it. I can lead in with the leading edge and read targets as I pass over them. I can tell the size of the target by hitting it from 3 sides. One coil has served me well on my XLT for 13 years.
Now you might say," Did I miss anything?" While the question should be ," Did I find anything?" Here are some of my finds. Frank...

Thanks for the help everyone. After careful consideration I have decided to upgrade the whole machine and go for the Minelab Safari.

Congratulations! I purchased my Minelab Safari just about 3 weeks ago and I must say it has served me well thus far. Today, I dug an early 1800's large cent and a very rare and cool lead toy from approx. late 1700's to early 1800's similar to the idea of Mel Gibson's son's toy soldiers in "The Patriot". It was not a toy soldier, but rather a civilian.
It will also dig coins and clad like nobody's business. It really helps to get a small trash coil for the Safari such as a 5" Excelerator, which is what I am using on mine for those modern or old trashy areas.
That being said, quite often it's not completely the machine that your swinging that's responsible for the greater finds but rather the user and also the site that you are detecting that gives you an advantage.
