6" accelerator coil?

I have just ordered a Safari detector and an extra 6" accelerator coil. I know it fits several of the other Minelab machines. I was thinking about using it in areas where there is a lot of goodies possibly masked or partially masked by iron. Will it provide better seperation like the smaller coils on other brand machines? Second question, just what is the accelerator coil supposed to do different than the bigger 11" coil? Monty

Re: 6" accelerator coil?

Monty,

I also have the 6" Excelerator coil and have used it on my Explorer SE Pro and my E-Trac.

Basically in a nutshell, it reduces your sweep path width which theoretically should reduce the number of targets your coil is hitting at the same time (vertically). If you think of the space between DD coils as the sweep path "footprint", and project that down into the ground like a knife blade, that is what's hitting various targets and reporting them to your detector. There is also a little effect from the round outside part of the DD coil, but it's mainly observed with shallow targets. When you are in surface trash, that outside edge can also be running over targets or trash and sounding off as well. So by having the coil be smaller in every respect, you are essentially reducing the area of coverage that the detector "sees" at any one point in time as you are sweeping the coil. Less targets equals a more clear picture to you and the detector. To really exaggerate this effect, try using just the Sunray probe to scan for targets... sweeping it like you would your main detector coil. You could also use a pinpointer. See how it beeps a LOT less often?

As far as depth concerns on the 6" Excelerator coil, you can expect to see 8" on a dime in good soil conditions :)
