Did a quick hunt today, went back to the silver fields. Had a fun couple of hours. The prize for the day is this Baseball Mitt. I laughed my butt off.
This is so cool, it has rivets in it.
Im thinking 1920s??? Nothing newer then a 1920 wheat has come out..
Any insight on age would be appreciated.
Thanks George .
Ps, I have it sitting in distilled water,
Anyone know how to persevere the leather? Thanks

Excellent Hunt Vino,, you really had a good day.
We used to rub our gloves with Saddle Soap. It comes in a tin just like shoe polish.
We could really use a glove like that in NYC with all the game costing errors that
some of The Mets are making,, lol

The baseball glove is sweet... however, I am a sucker for silver coins... I see that a couple of green IHCs snuck into your pouch too. Well done Vino.

All hail... The great BamVino, the Sultan of Swing, the Colossus of Coil, George! Honestly... Who finds a vintage baseball glove buried in the ground. One in near perfect condition no less. And silver to boot! Incredible!

Yours is likewise a split finger glove, which I believe predates WW2 but yours could be a tad bit older. Very cool.

Is that where they got the term "split finger fast ball?" :laughing7:

I think that's Matt Harvey's glove that he tossed after last night's game :BangHead:

Great finds Vino. I'd use Linseed Oil on that ball glove. Nice find. Congratulations

Very nice finds.

That looks like my old ball glove! Honus Wagner model.

Saddle soap for the glove, you can find at a feed store or maybe a pet store, or go to a shoe shop for leather oil for treating shoes.

With all my leather work, I use Neatsfoot oil. There are several good leather oils out there. Just very gently apply it and allow it to sit and soak it up before applying another coat.
If it won't get it back to pliable, at least it should protect it from further cracking and disintegration. Don't try any stretching or molding it, if as old as it looks, it could crack and fall apart.
After applying a couple of coats, you might be able to squeeze the leather between thumb and finger and get the oil worked in. My two cents anyway. Nice and unusual finds! Cool.

That is a really unique find. I'd vote banner

Thanks alot ESM.
Its still wet, I took it out of distilled water. Should I apply it when still wet or let it dry?

Well, that's a tough question..
I wouldn't let it dry too fast, that'd crack it. Heat will crack it. But the moisture has to get out or it will eventually kill it.
The oils may seal in the moisture if applied to all sides, so, I would dry it slow as possible, Then oil it asap, afterwards.
If it's dry, the oil will soak in really pretty quickly. That'll help it alot.

Wow.....that glove was a nice surprise! Great job!
