7.9g ring gold colored, stamped 925, reads 14k on gold tester (?)

I've been trying out my luck on land lately as the beaches are fickle, fickle hunting grounds. I found this ring yesterday and it came out of the ground looking a lot like gold.
However, it's stamped 925 China (boo!) plus a makers mark. I tested it tonight with my Auricle gold tester and it came up 14k on 3 tests. WTF??

Gold plated?
My hopes are low on this one, but it would be interesting to know.

I would say most likely gold plated over 925 silver.
Found a few like that.

How to test if it's only plated? Scratch test with acid? I've got a kit ordered and on the way.
