Just got in after another morning hunt at a local lake erie beach. I put my Equinox away for a few days and took out my trusty Gold bug pro. First hit was a rather large lure for around here. 5 1/2" long with the name Viper on it. View attachment 1626258 along with a birds beak View attachment 1626259 in the same scoop. I found 2 belly button hanging rings. (non precious metal) View attachment 1626260View attachment 1626261and a lever thingy with a hole in it. I still don't know what its for and any help would be appreciated with thanks. View attachment 1626262View attachment 1626263View attachment 1626264 also 2-2$ coins, 1-1$ coin, 9 quarters, 2 dimes, 3 nickels and 3 pennies. thanks for looking and happy hunting.

No Barbs... Catfish Spines have serrated barbs.

I don't think all species have barbs, and or, they get worn down in the waves and sand.. I've found a few myself water hunting lake Erie..

Google catfish spine if you don't believe me..

Maybe so, maybe the spines were purposely smoothed out, when working the tool. It does look close for sure..

Is that a bone needle? So cool

Nice finds. I agree, catfish spine.

The lever thing with the hole in it is actually a bookmark. It would have had something dangling from the hole. They make all sorts of them like this... https://www.google.com/search?safe=.....1c.1.64.img..4.0.0....0.9V57wFSDPhg#imgrc=_

This is Exactly what I was thinking but not saying...
That would make this an Artifact and a really special find indeed..
:occasion14:
Thank you buck8point that would be cool.

Maybe the three or four I found (in the water) were also purposely smoothed out, for sewing (in the water) where catfish live and die..

Or it's just a simple dorsal spine off a flathead cat?

If it came out of a sheltered cave, amongst other artifacts it might be a different story.. Sometimes one has to take finds into context first..

We find catfish spines, top and sides, on the beaches and in the surf in Louisiana all the time, even the ones that have been in the surf or the water for a long time still have very pronounced and sharp barbs on the full length of the spine. You are ALWAYS looking for them in the sand because walking one one would ruin your day. In fact, when we catch catfish, saltwater or freshwater, first thing we do, is lop them off right at the body with a pair of heavy angle cutters, then throw them away, so as not to get holes spiked into an ice chest, or live well, or leg, arm, Etc.
So what I meant, was that if it was an artifact, and was a primitive sewing needle, made of a catfish spine, maybe they ground down the spines when making the tool. Then again, maybe they were made from another fish fin spike that dosent have spines. Catfish arent the only fish with barbed spines either, Some Carp has them also.

This beak is as smooth as glass. With only one hole at the end in the center. I could easily sew with it I’m sure. *but* I’m no expert in artifacts. This came out of the water in my scoop with lots of sand and small stones that could give it the smoothness from being moved back and forth in the waves over time. I may take it to a local museum soon and see what they say. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for all your interesting feedback.

The hole through it is natural too, spinal cord, like I mentioned before, I've found at least three exactly like that one you found, in the same lake you found yours..

Good luck on your next hunt!

Well I took the birds beak to the museum in Niagara on the lake. I will let everyone that’s interested know if it is a native sewing needle artifact. Should know in a weeks time. Thanks for everyone’s interest.
