This is true! Bill

Well, waddya know!

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey.. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass; hence, Brass Monkeys.

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
And all this time, you might have thought this just a vulgar expression.
You might want to send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to at least a few friends.

So now you know!!

The things ya don't learn on this site! That has to go under the "truth is stranger than fiction" category.

Thanks for posting this oldbill, very entertaining........LOL

Soooo.....I may need some help on this , Bill .
In the morning I'm going to share this info with my 8 yr old grandson before he climbs on the bus to go to his second grade class ruled by a 'very' politicaly correct teacher.
If she doesn't keelhaul me the teachers of the students he shares the 45 min. bus ride and new info with probably will .
Via his 'Pappy' he seems to be a fountain of information that the other kids don't have .

I share such information with my son to pass on to his P.C. teacher as well. I'm still waiting to get a note from her asking why I told him she was a Bolshevik. His future teachers will probably hate my guts. :icon_pirat: ;D

Pimp , you don't consider this a 'BAD' thing ;do you ?

Hell, no. I call it a more balanced education.....for the teacher. :tongue3:

For example, one recent escapade.

My son is a duel citizen - he was born in Australia, and his mother is Australian. On the day of Obama's inaguration, my son told me at dinner that his teacher was talking about how "we have a new President now!" I told him no, that as of that day, his head of state was Queen Elizabeth II and the head of government was the Prime Minister of Australia, and to inform his teacher of that fact. (not that Prime Minister Rudd is a treat, either.)

At least I didn't tell him to shout "God Save the Queen!" after reciting the pledge in the mornings.

Too funny.
Our younger still in school, college though, now knows which teachers are PC and which ones are P.C.
I'm pretty sure she'll only share such info as OldBill provides with the ones that are Pretty Cool.
