The cautionary tale should be don't dig in national forests. I wouldn't judge someone who picked up an artifact on the surface or from a creek, but digging in protected caves is wrong.

Not being an idiot and posting pictures of yourself doing illegal things is also a good lesson. Kind of like the guy who called 911 to complain that his drug dealer took his cash and didn't deliver the drugs.

There will always be the ones that are unscrupulous for what ever reasons. People do it deer hunting, relic hunting and artifacts hunting. Do not be an idiot. They knew what they did was wrong.
