Im not looking for better pics just trying to get a handle on the relation of what I am seeing. I need to see the entire patent in the same picture. Then maybe I could guess by the amount of space in between. How many lines are there? Is this correct? :dontknow:

PAT. MAY 1
1
188

Another problem is that my screen is too small so I resized to get a better idea.

There appears to be a 1 underneath MAY. :icon_scratch: Is there 2 patents?

MAY 1, 188
1

The entire patent is in a semi circle over the top of the face above the slide. As far as spacing if you look at the y in May and the 1 buy itself, then the following 1 in 188 the spacing in between would be even, if the 1 for the day of the month had another number the spacing would be uneven. May 1 188 even , May 17 188 uneven. Is this spacing your talking about?

A picture would tell a thousand words.

I think you are correct, according to the spacing it appears to be PAT. MAY 1, 188
So we are missing one number.

The last number looks like a 3, 5, 6, or 8.

creskol, It does look like the tin seals on the strings of sown feed bags we used to deal with. Not seen any in a long time, I am sure they will find what it is with the patent search.

I searched patents issued May 1 in the 1880's with the word "seal" but no match. :dontknow:

This is not a seal, this has a slide mechanism on the face, the same side as the patent date. The slide is in the up position, and the bar with the groove channeled into it is in the out position inside of the top hanger. There is something still retaining its gilt or is silver in nature inside the bottom aperture. The slide mechanism if slid down would most likely release something or something came out of the small aperture. My guess was a retractable watch key winder. Arty
