Pretty cool piece HP. I like the staining on it.
 

Could that be for hide tanning?
 

I’ve heard that some of those were used as spoons. I don’t know if that’s true or not. It’s a great find either way.

I've seen those inner conk shell cork screw looking things around and some quite large ones. Thise are Native?

I am still a newbie. Did the chip the conk shells down to acquire that core peice?

I just saw one over 6 inches the other day. Didnt pick it up?! Hmm

They can be NA if they have been altered. The thick end will have been ground on an angle to be used as a scraper or maybe a chisel of sorts. You can see that in the one in Tom's pics.

Yes, they chipped and ground the outer edges of shell to get the columnella. If rolled around in the surf (not near a site) then nature does the work and you can't tell if it was ever made by man or used at that point. Always pick up and look carefully at any columnellas found on inland sites!
