Was able to sneak out for a 1.5 hr hunt tonight, headed back to the church/manse area. The manse was built in the 1960's, and has lots of fill dirt in the yard. However, that fill dirt has produced some decent finds over the years. Seeing as I didn't have much time I figured I'd head over and try to find a mid century silver dime or something interesting.
I managed 14 pennies and the usual junk. Then I got a "that's gotta be a silver quarter" signal and dug this little salt spoon. It certainly looked plated at first glance. When I got home and set it down on the counter I heard the telltale silver clink. Got my loupe out and sure enough it looked like the brown stuff was something ON the spoon rather than the base metal being exposed.
I did some light electrolysis and then some baking soda. Im betting it's silver, and has "BIRKS" on it. I'm off to google info on it now. Hopefully this is my first real silver piece of silverware.
***the IH cent is for size reference, found it a while ago***
