Was able to sneak out for a 1.5 hr hunt tonight, headed back to the church/manse area. The manse was built in the 1960's, and has lots of fill dirt in the yard. However, that fill dirt has produced some decent finds over the years. Seeing as I didn't have much time I figured I'd head over and try to find a mid century silver dime or something interesting.

I managed 14 pennies and the usual junk. Then I got a "that's gotta be a silver quarter" signal and dug this little salt spoon. It certainly looked plated at first glance. When I got home and set it down on the counter I heard the telltale silver clink. Got my loupe out and sure enough it looked like the brown stuff was something ON the spoon rather than the base metal being exposed. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1468558355.929873.webp

I did some light electrolysis and then some baking soda. Im betting it's silver, and has "BIRKS" on it. I'm off to google info on it now. Hopefully this is my first real silver piece of silverware.

Gorgeous! Congrats on the oldie silver! Sub 8-)

Congrats on your first silver spoon. It sure looks silver from the pictures. Hope it is for you.

Well done JC!

That's an a killer little spoon. Congrats and good luck.

That's a nice little turn of the century find. Early 1900's. I did find some high end silverware by BIRK, on the Internet but was unable to find some different markings like Sterling or Silver plate. Your spoon looks silver but the dark spots may be the base metal peeking out from under some excellent plating. Hope it is Sterling
Congrats

Thanks everybody. I did locate the word STERLING on the spoon. It's worn, but I can see it clearly in the right light. This is consistent for Birks silverware made 1904-1924. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1468593253.519741.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1468593272.109656.webp
