Decided to go back to the yard I hit this morning and it was terrible. I picked up one wheat and dug a lot of junk. I was making my last pass at the back fenceline and the SE started really jumping. I tried to pinpoint and did but there was two items in the hole and I scratched the bigger item. I believe the smaller item is a suspender clip and I really like it, and I like how nice it cleaned up. It says pat. Nov. 1, 1870 and has some decoritive designs. Need your help on the bigger item, it is about 6" long and 4" wide. Thought it was something to do with music but not sure about all of the small holes in it.

Very nice. I also believe the bottom one has something to do with music.

The bottom piece looks to me like part of a music holder that would have attached to some type of wind instrument. That's my guess...

It looks like a trivet to me, you know the things that set by the stove and on the table to put hot things on.

That was one of my thoughts as well but it doesn't explain all of the holes in it. My dad took a guess that it was the top or bottom of a music box which might make sense with the holes.

That's not a bad guess either!

you guys were right about the bottom item. it's part of a lyre, which attaches to an istrument and holds the music when the person is marching or standing. most likely the holes are because the other part of it is missing and it was probably attched with screws which went in the holes on the half you found.

I have two items that look very similar to yours. Both are attached. One I guessed was some sort of suspender clip also - it reads Made Only By Potter & Smith Boston, Nov. 1870 - I think it's made of bronze. The other one is about the same size as yours, with a bunch of holes also. Mine is made of copper, and a little more scroll work than yours and there is type on it which reads W.S. Johnson USA. I thought it was pretty funny that you found the same two whatzits that I found!
