I went back to the spot that PaleoJoe and I had started last week and dug today for about 3 hours. I was starting to get a little frustrated after the first hour as I had moved quite a bit of dirt and hadn't found the first piece. I then decided to change my strategy and I started digging the floor of the hole instead of the wall and I instantly starting finding things. Within three or four swipes I had a Bone Bead, a killer Bone Awl, and a nice little Drilled Tooth. I hit a dry spell again and moved over a few feet and found a really nice Stemmed Point and a Deer Antler tine that had been drilled out on the end for hafting and that was the end of the good finds. I did manage to find a few other broken points, a couple of Preforms, a broken Discoidal, and some Pottery pieces. All in all, I was happy with the days finds.

Pic 1. The days haul. For reference the Bone Awl is 4 1/8 inches long.

Pic 2. The Stemmed Point. It's kind of unusual to find this type on this site since the site is a Ft Ancient site and that point is more than likely an Adena type. I'd say it was found and either used by the later culture or was kept as good luck piece.

Pics 3, 4. Both sides of the killer Bone Awl. This is one on the better Awls I have from this site. It is highly polished from end to end and has a nice needle tip. When I first found it I thought it was damaged on the side close to the base, but it's ground really smooth inside that indention and was evidently done that way on purpose.

Pic 5. This is the little Drilled Tooth. I was surprised I even saw this one it's so small. A very nice tooth though with no damage at all.

Pic 6. The Bone Bead. Both ends are a little boogered up, but still a decent Bead

Pics 7, 8. The Deer Antler Tine that was drilled for hafting. It's either the start of an arrowpoint or it's flaking tool.

Good haul...I used to love to dig, never know what feature you would run into, fire pit, storage pit, refuse pit and just isolated items, laying out of the circle. Any stratification of the dirt? Sometimes you can see the different horizons. Any pottery?

Yeah there is all kinds of Pottery there. I found a couple decent rim pieces today but I didn't take any pictures of them. It's funny you should mention features because the spot we are digging has a huge Clay Hearth around the outside of the midden. It is almost like cement when your trowel hits it from the fire hardening the clay. I tried to dig through it a Little today but it's almost impossible to get through. There pieces of shell, bone, and ash all through it, but they are really small and fine pieces and I don't think there's any artifacts in there. This site has been excavated both professionally and by novices over the years and a lot of what we dig through is redeposit that has already been dig. Occasionally you'll find a midden that hasn't been touched though and that's when the pieces start coming out. I think Joe going tomorrow so I'm sure he'll be posting some things when he gets home.

Great finds Steve, wish I could find drilled teeth, I would make a necklace for sure. Everywhere I go ppl comment on my Savanah river point necklace. I wear it with pride. Most, if not all women like diamonds, not me, I'm happy with a peice of rock around my neck. ::)
Look forward to seeing more of yours & Joes finds.

Molly.

man...i dream of hunting that place...coolest artifacts i've ever seen have come from there...WTG...im sooooo jealous :tongue11:

that is just incredible, specially the broken discoidal- that's a crazy good site you have there!

Nice symmetry on that point! WTG!!! I'm gonna
have to pull my self out of this arrowhead rut and
start finding something. How much time would
you say all those took?

I was there about 3 hours and I was digging almost the entire time. I did take a break once and walk through the ditch line to see what I could find and I came up with one broken point.

I wanna get to some creeks, but I live in a urban zone and deer hunting starts
early here. So, I might either travel or start getting the bow ready.

DF...your pictures never cease to amaze me.

Hey dorkfish, I found a long triangle that is really thick.
Small triangles were also found. It's as long as J Brown's
but with a base shape like the points on the right. Any idea
what it is? The base is slightly concave. Thin ears and tip
with defined edging. The sides come in towards the tip and
is not crude.

Do you have a picture? It sounds like it may be a Levana Point, but I can't say for sure without a picture.

D.F. Fort Ancient artifacts are the coolest. Up here in north central Ohio along the Sandusky, in about 25 years of surface hunting i've found only 2 of the elongated triangular arrowpoints that i think may be the f.ancient type (long one in photo is one of them) . Hundreds of the smaller type though,(in my photo)are the kind i commonly find up here.
Thanks for showing

Nice finds J Brown. Do you find any of the serrated type?
