My friend who has an antique shop. buys lockers & into older homes in the French Quarters of NOLA. She salvaged a zip lock bag of Indian artifacts, sad thing there was something that had rusted in the bag & stained the artifacts. Looking closer & the feel is bone. One looks like cow/bison horn carved down.

The first 2 pics is a wood.

All the rest looks like some type of bone.

Sorry, I believe if I reduced the actual sizing, the pics wouldn't be sideways.

Does anyone know how to gets the stains out?

Thanks!

RR

I think your bone pieces are ivory, maybe walrus or fossilized mammoth.

Definitely ivory. I can see the Schrager lines in the puck shaped piece. I can't tell from the lines if it is elephant or wooly mammoth ivory. Polish the end with the fine lines and you can tell by the angle the lines cross. It it's elephant, it's like a hot potato. You can own it, but can't buy or sell it. You can only pass it to your heirs. Get it ID'd before you try to sell it! If it is mammoth, no problem at all buying, selling, etc. I carve mammoth ivory. It is a wonderful medium. Here's a mammoth pendant I did for my wife Lee Ann. 1 1/4" in dia. Gary

edit:There are no Federal laws against owning/selling mammoth ivory. However, I remember now that some states have enacted laws banning ALL ivory. So, check your state laws before you act.
