the site i hunt is loaded with scrapers
it is easy to find a half dozen in 15 minutes
i know old digger has some very colorful examples from montana IMG_2872.jpg IMG_2875.jpg IMG_2876.jpg IMG_2873.jpg IMG_2874.jpg IMG_1685.jpg 2011-10-04_21-05-22_268.jpg IMG_1143.jpg IMG_1149.jpg IMG_1158.jpg IMG_1159.jpg IMG_1159.jpg IMG_1160.jpg IMG_1161.jpg

This is a great thread - just thought I keep it going.

Gum Drops & other than KRF scrapers

We call the little scrapers like most of those in the last photo "gum drops". I don't know if there is such a term, but when Steve tells me he found a nice "gum drop", I know what he talking about, usually penny size or smaller at shaped like these. There's a variety of material, jasper, pw, quartzite, flint, chert and ... .. ?

The first two photos are some of my "other than" KRF favorites.

Keep in mind that the little ones all likely started out as much larger pieces. A good on was used a.d re-worked over and over.

OK these are going to be the last for me. The quartz frame are my largest and favorites. The black one the the one and only I have ever found like it. Its called a Beak Scraper and it is not broken it is designed this way, a early piece made from skunk chert. Personal finds, Great thread Larson!

Gum drops. I also call different pieces names that I picked up from elders that I have hunted with. I always refer to a " game stone" as a pee-dab. Plummets are plumbobs and axe heads have always been tomahawks. I have dropped the tomahawk, but the others stand. I must pay tribute to my hunting buddies ( some have passed) and keep them alive in my hunting. What better way than use their terms. Although, I have stood corrected time and time again, I still use the old names. Nice scrapers by the way. I see some of that pet wood I think. Love that stuff!

although it is hard to see the ends of those 3 pieces are wore from use
could have been for grinding paint, spices, medicine, or maybe grinding ingredients for making glue
glue was for the usual hafting purposes but also for making glue for the Mandan Dandys hair
mandan men were very concerned with their appearance....they would glue their long hair braids and pony tails so they would keep in place (like hair spray)
they also wore mirrors on their wrists when they could get one so they could stop several times a day and make themselves pretty
we ended up not picking these up hardly at all anymore, they are laying all over the place
(i am serious about this Rusty)

I'm kind of embarrassed to say this but it's true, we usually don't pick em up. I know Steve and Digger have been picking up scrapers (and lots of other stuff) at this site for 20+ years. And they just keep popin up. I haven't counted but I'm sure I picked up close to 100 good ones this summer.

I know we're very fortunate (spoiled) to have access to this site and it is very much appreciated and respected.

I know you are serious. I know if you were to pick up every piece that had evidence of use, you would come in weighted down. I still hate to see these tools for little odds and ends destroyed. I'm a few years younger than you, I know, but I do pick these pieces up, and at least toss them on the edge of a field. This allows me to say I tried to save it. About the mirrors on the wrist, we used to wear them on our shoe, in high school.

hey thanks rusty
nope we are not destroying anything this field is no longer farmed
ijust keep the weeds off with kelly's help and:
two john deere 720 diesels pulling 18" duckfeet with the stroke control set at 5 inches...we ain't hurting anything
also a john deere model 70 gas that pulls a 7 foot double disc, and a good one
maybe you don't know this lingo but it is farmer talk (plowboy talk)
when we turn the field over to prevent the weeds from becoming a fire hazard and getting too tall, we then wait for a good inch or inch and a half of rain
after that the ground is wet and dark....so only the grey chert pcs show up good
once the ground drys and turns light grey the jasper and KRF start to show better
know what i mean rusty my friend?

Well I guess I will add these from today. Went back to the field cause the farmer said they might be planting wheat soon. I am sure that will be the end of the hunt till it is done.

I got you. I know you would never destroy an artifact, especially deliberately. It is hard not to break artifacts while working the fields, it's expected. Some of the rougher stone tools are not worth lugging home, so I toss them on the field's edge. Farmers here seem to appreciate it when I toss rocks out of the field, and on occasion, I have noticed rocks that I saved from the plow disappear. Someone appreciated the stone for what it is, and took it home. We all win!! I have been around farm equipment my whole life, and I can't place a duck foot. Think I'll google it now!!

There's these too.

Jasper, chert and petrified wood. (There are a few scrapers in the jasper photo that I'm not sure what the material is.)

omg omg wow ,a friend gave me a old 1970 black light poster
so I go dug out my old black light, and it still works(37 years old and still working, man they made things good back than.)
and all my mandans artifacts are now orange with strips.so pretty.
so I start thinking what will it look like under my rock light.

short and long wave UV. ,and the blacklight, so i turn them on one at a time and wow you got a color light show
and it will just blow your mind.
