went for a drive... sunset crater, associated with walnut canyon national monument.
this is a pleasant drive north of flagstaff...industrialized tourism at it's best.

thanks cyn...how can such a harsh environment is so beautiful?
the following pictures are of native american structures older than the previous pieces....pueblo I, late basket maker period.
the first is a "pit structure" this is next to a pueblo I ruin, so it could be late basket maker, or pueblo I period...it all runs together out here...the center of photo, rock rubble..difficult to photo a circle.
the next two photos are early pueblo...above ground structures, separated by a mile or so...
the cleft in the rock is an old trail, main street to the ruins above the cliff...
shards literally cover the earth around these sites...the tools stand out like a sore thumb.

many ruins in the southwest appear to be defensive positions...not a fort...but certainly a fine refuge...protected. this was big cat country until the firearm...jaguar, mountian lion...
the sinagua people were peaceful, not many 'weapons' are found...though...a big rock is a decent weapon from a forty foot fall.

Very nice photo's pippin, I see alot of those out there but never got out to really check them out. Now after seeing your photos I'll take the time next winter when we are out there, thanks for posting them.

Those are some awesome spots! Reminds me of a trip my hubby and I took out west. We spent a couple of days at Chaco Canyon hiking around. You could almost feel the "spirits" of the people that lived there.
