Actually, the police frequently roll up on me when I am out detecting the sidewalks and medians and parks in Old Town. They stop, the car window rolls down, and they invariably say, "Findin' anything good?". They're actually pretty friendly for the most part and only chase me off when somebody calls them out on me. (And then only at night, since I am legal by day- I have a city permit).

I am surprised they chase you out. Seems like if you have a permit and your staying in legal areas that they can't tell you what you can and can't do. They ask you to leave just because some busybody know-it-all complains. I usually have a two word phrase for people like that, not appropriate for the forum of course, the second word being "off".

This only happens when I'm in one of the parks after sundown. I have learned to do night hunting only in the business district so I'm not around any homes. By day, in the very unlikely event that anybody hassles me, all I have to do is wave the permit at the cops and they tell me to have a nice day and they drive off.

By night, however, when some folks see me out in the park after dark, they get antsy. When that happens and they call the police, the cops tell me that technically the parks close at sundown (they personally don't care that I'm detecting out there but they have to chase me off at night, for obvious reasons). So I've learned to hunt only the parks in the business district at night. One is right across the street from the police station, actually, and they don't hassle me there at all, even at night. I guess they only do so if a citizen complains.
