Hey fellers! Got a little story. Not nearly as good as kalinpro, and it took a little more work. Im still envious of his tidy little take in quarters.

On thursday General McNabb came and visited our group, and was impressed enough to give us a "wow!" compliment. So, on Friday, the group commander told us to "Aloha" on our of there at noon, workload permitting. My workload, very generous in its ability to evaporate (into a drawer or three), allowed me to depart and commence hunting those wily silverbacks in the wild. Lets see, leave work at noon, thats plenty of time to gird my self for the safari ahead. I went back to camp, had some lunch, read some treasurenet, and departed at 2 oclock, plenty of time to hit all the banks on the north side of town (and a few that I missed on the southside 2 weeks ago) before they closed shop at 5 or 6. First though, I had to unload my $1000 from the week. So, I headed for my regular bank and deposited them. The teller there, very nice lady, asked me if I was interested in in a couple of Ikes, and I said sure! Score 4 of many Ikes for the day. Then, I ventured out into the ovenlike west Texas heat....and saw mirages of silver! Mother nature is such a tease! I walked 2 blocks and hit two different banks and did my best to charm the tellers, those mythical keepers of silver! Both banks will now be holding their bags of halves from the coin machine for me. :) One bank also sold me 15 more Ikes. Pockets are feeling a little bulky by now.
Next, I headed across the tracks and hit a city hub drive through bank (serving 3 smaller branches) where I obtained $480 in halves. $400 loose and $80 rolled. And ya know what, I can hear the silver in the loose ones....and look inside...and I can see it! Bingo! More silver harvested from the wild!
Continued on to some more banks, a few more miscellaneous loose halves, nothing of note, and then I came upon my first wild silver dollar! I hit a citibank (sp?) and engaged the tellers in conversation. Sadly, none of them had any loose halves, and I was on the verge of walking out defeated, when the vault tellers says "Wait! Let me look in the vault!" Who am I to argue? So I waited, and turns out they have a bag of $399 in loose halves they ordered for a customer that never picked them up. I bought them. Then, she asks me if I buy dollar coins too, because they just happen to have a bag of those. "Well, let me take a look" I says! She brings me the bag and what to my wondering eyes should appear (not eight little reindeer) but instead a crapload of Sac's, Susans, and Ikes. Taking a closer look I spy a Peace dollar scattered in there! Bingo. I politely tell the teller I will take all the BIG dollars. I emphasized big dollars. I wanted all the Ikes and the Peace. Sadly, I was to be thwarted by another big silver hunter. The tellers proceeded to go into the back and count out the Ikes, and every now and then I hear a hearty silver laden thud. You know what I mean, that Thunk-ching sound! Then, one of the tellers emerges and nonchalantly drops a small pile of coins behind her telephone...and they were silver...and walks away. Haha, not so quickly! I may be wrong here, but I surely felt like I was being screwed. This teller (not the vault teller) was taking the silver out, and not going to give me any! I was aggravated, because the vault teller told me they had had this bag of dollars in the vault for TWO years, more than enough time for this other teller, or any teller, to hunt them out. Argh! Anyways, I guilted her into giving me one of the silver dollars, lol, I had to lay on the charm. I came away from the encounter with a 1922 Peace dollar, in fairly rough shape, while the teller escaped with a 1922 Peace as well a 1921S Morgan. Im happy I managed to get one. Also took all $129 in Ikes. Then I went home and searched everything for silver and DDs (only half finished with that part, had about $250 in 71D, 72, 73D, 74D, and 77D to look through).

The grand results are:
State Natl Bank $480 Halves
43 1964
1 1966
12 1967
6 1968D

Citibank $399 Halves
1 1965

$154 Ike Dollars
1 1922D Peace

Texas State Bank $25 Halves
2 1967
1 1969D
1 2002D

and one 74D dd so far.

Thanks for reading! Hope I dont come off sounding like a jerk with the teller. Keep tearing those rolls, its out there!

You don't sound like a jerk at all. If they showed you the bag of dollars and offered to sell them to you, then they should have sold all of them to you. I don't think that was correct of the teller to take them out once they showed them. I'm glad that you were able to get one Peace dollar, congratulations. Also congratulations on all the IKES and the other silver halves. Nice hunting! ;D

I think you were polite about it, and I think I would have been really steamed it that happened to me. I'm not sure how I would have reacted, especially with my female hormones. ROFL ;D

Take 'em all next time.... don't give them the opportunity, LOL!

All the chaff spends the same. Getting tougher though, the more I get, LOL!

Nice haul! ;D

I may be wrong, but to the best of my knowlage, tellers are not allowed to "search" the coins, let alone keep them.

Paul

PS
Great haul on the halves!!

GREAT JOB!!! If i were you i would have tried for all of the silver dollars (im a kid so i might have had a small advantage...). Congreats!

Great story! I guess you should be happy to get a Peace dollar for $1 in currency, but all the silver would have been great. Even if you offered to buy the whole bag, they still would have had to count the coins and would have harvested the silver, so I think you did well. But man, that is cold to show you the silver dollars they removed from the bag, 8).

Congrats, and keep on hunting.
