Evening everyone. Just wanted to share this with you. One of my pickup banks called yesterday and told me that they had a partial bag of halves off the machine. I called them today to confirm and they said that they would hold onto them for me. This is only my 2nd bag and I was anxious to buy it.
After work, i stopped to pick up my usual halve box along with $295.00 in bagged halves. They told me that they already sorted them out but there were still a few foreign coins in there. If there was any discrepancy to please let them know so they could reimburse me. I told her that it was ok if it was off a little as I collect the foreign coins as well. I thanked her again and left.
I assumed that they pulled all the silver but you know what they say about assumptions. There was a nice handful of silver coins in there, mostly 40%ers, but a few 90%ers as well. Now for the good stuff. ;D
I'm going thru the coins a handful at a time. The 1st good silver foreign coin was a 1939 2 Shillings. Then i saw a coin that i never would have dreamed of being in there. A beautiful 1855 large cent! Before i finished the last handful, 2 more large cents would show up(1 good, 1 bad and 1 just plain ugly)The dates were a nice 1855, a bent 1852, and an unreadable date. I also see a thin black coin in the middle of another handful and it ends up being my oldest CRHing find to date, a well worn 1816 Spanish 4 Reales!
I hope you enjoyed the read. HH everyone, MM2

Re: A rare bag purchase leads to some nice finds.

that's an insane bag, congrats. I usually have most of my good finds from bags as well. Sometimes I'll find some good foreign coins, usually from dime bags. After seeing this, I'm gonna have to try and get more bags!

Mountain Man,
Congratulations, those are some awesome coins! Very happy for you! ;D
Hope that bank keeps producing for you, that is like lightning striking thrice in the same spot -- silver, large cents, and foreign coins all at once.
Impressive, Sir! :icon_salut:

Thanks for the comments. All of the branches of the bank that i purchased the bag from were getting new coin counting machines. The teller was kind to remember me when they were removing the halve bags from the old machine and saved it for me. I checked around to some of the other branches but they all had the new machines in place already and the bags were already out the door. We just never know what opportunities will come up in this hobby. One of the things that make this hobby so exciting. Thanks again. HH-MM2

I wanted to bring this post to the top because the 1816 coin wasn't spanish silver as I originally thought. Thought you might find it interesting. My thanks to the quick IDers in the 'What is it' section.

Very interesting, a great find either way. I'm going to try and get some bags tomorrow. I love finding foreign coins in bags of halves, always fun.

Hey - I found a two shilling like that metal detecting last week. Very nice coin. It was almost a foot down! :headbang:

Typically, British silver coins (3p, 6p, shillings, florins, half crowns and crowns) were sterling (.925 fine) silver until 1920; when they were debased to .500 fine. Starting in 1947 all the silver came out and they were CuNi going forward.

Awesome find on the half crown MM !

Your undated large cent is the oldest of the three, Matron Head style which puts it 1816-1839.
