I had a short time to hunt at an undisclosed location and found a really cool Civil War button. This is a three piece Pennsylvania staff officer's button. It is a Scoville that dates between 1850 and 1865 according to my research on the back mark. The first one I have ever found like it. Thanks for looking and may your coil find great things. Nice PA State Seal. I often wondered why I had never found one since I live in Pennsylvania. Then I found two this year. The first one was in several pieces. The second one had the back separate from the front when I pulled it from the hole. I glued the back to the front later. Here it is. The backmark on mine spanned the civil war, so it could be post war. If I'm not mistaken, I believe they were all 3 piece design.

Nice, Steve. Mine is pretty solid with a perfect shank intact.

This past Saturday I went back to the farm where I found my PA state seal button and found another. And just like the other, the back separated from the front when removed from the dirt grrrr!! Guess I have another glue job to do. The PA buttons I have been finding have a Waterbury Button Co. backmark.

Ahhh but they are around you Tommy. The Michigan CW era State Seal button is very similar. They have antlered deer instead of horses.
