A relic kind of day

I went out today with 'Okie Hillbilly', & a young man who is just getting into detecting, we spent an enjoyable day in 60 degree, sunny weather, (snakes were even crawling), we had along his wife, little toddler son, & short-legged dog.
We went to an old foundation, hunted there, & around this big oak tree in a meadow, then we had a 'picnic' at a pond, then went to another old houseplace where the foundation & chimneys were all that were left.
Although nothing 'valuable' was found, we had a (Relic kind of day).
We ran out of daylight but had a 'fun relaxing day', & hope to return & finish later, & we probably will have a 'new member' sign up.
We found part of a horseshoe, little toy wagon bed, square nail, bolts, washer, (square), stove parts, spent bullet, brick that reads, Ft.Smith Arkansas, etc..........

Looks like some cool places to detect and you had some nice weather. Beats sitting around the house or a day at work. It was frigid with snow on the ground here in western Ohio. I decided to stay home.

You said it, I feel for you guys in the Northern latitudes.
We actually get out more here in the winter on 'mild days', the summers are a 'bugger', with hot humid weather, & ticks & chiggers.

Hey Newt, (long time no hear), they may have, but most of these folks around here were pretty poor.
I heard one 'old timer' remark: if we dropped a coin, we hunted until we found it.

I sometimes wonder where you folks live and detect where all the loose coins come from. The bank must've had some fella totin' holey sacks of pennies and dimes around town for years...

and, yes, I am jealous.... :P

It seems like the 'early pioneers' had little money, but after the area's became settled, more 'affluent folks' moved into the area, thus 'Gold & Silver' became more common.
Then during the 'Great Depression', times really got tough.
I just heard of a guy (now deceased) who buried 17 fruit jars of Silver coins around his house, we're working on getting permission.

There is one relic in your pile that I would have been pleased to find...it's an oldie too. 18th century barrel tap...intact too with the exception of the handle. That is a great find in my book!

Nice selection on finds you have there.........That brick you have there would be a nice addition to a friend of mines collection..........Would you be interested in selling it? I'm not sure he has it , but knowing him............He would be interested! WTG

What does one look for to determine it is a 17th century example, and not a later example?

The most telling characteristic is the part that sticks into the barrel. On an 18th century example it should resemble tree bark. Also, the little protrusion at the end of the spout...this is for hanging your cup and are not on later examples. I had found a nearly intact spigot at a very early site...see attached pics.
