Hello All,

The Iron Brigade has been digging lots of holes recently in the ice and snow here. I met up with the buddies today and got a bit of a late start on my hunt after teaching class. Now I know that the posts from myself and the other Iron Brigade diggers have been pretty darned good recently, but this was a shorter hunt (3 hours for me in the freezing temps and snow coming down). So I figure this is a bit of a reality check. :P I did manage a few interesting pieces--nothing spectacular. A flat button, an odd "key" (posted in the "What is it" threads), lantern pieces, assorted buckles, an iron stirrup, and last but not least--this change purse 8) When I first recovered the change purse, I realized what it was (perhaps by connecting on a psychic level with this relic, because it didn't look like anything I had seen before at first!) Here's a photo of it As-Dug:

I put it in a Ziploc bag because I didn't know whether there were any coins inside or not--and I didn't want to risk any further damage to the crumbling purse itself.

When I got it home, I started cleaning it simply by rinsing it with water. Small pieces had already started to come off of it, but I just wanted to get enough of the mud off to see what it looked like:

After cleaning, here's what I had. I found the tiny broken piece of the top of the purse about 15 feet away from the rest of it. Although there were no coins inside it, I really like this fragile little relic. :)

And here is a photo of the rest of the housesite relics:

Detectorists can't always make spectacular recoveries every hunt, but each shovelfull of dirt holds endless possibility.

BB,
Very nice finds. I saw that first picture and thought it was chocolate. ;D
Odd looking key for sure.
What is that clip in the bottom left of the last picture? For suspenders?
Mirage found one in our hunt last Saturday.
Congrats,
MM

Like the stirrup, sure looks like a candidate for electrolysis~
Relics are great, that seems to be my forte lately. ;)

That's what it is. They come in many shapes and sizes. One of these days, I'll get around to making a Tnet Suspender Clip Show. :D I actually think it might be pretty interesting. I've dug a lot of them, but never any two that were the same...

This one is a little later than what I usually find. It's marked "IDEAL" across the top.

Very nice. Good for you.

Thank you for sharing.

BB: Nice relics, love the purse. You did well to keep it together. It sure was a delicate little lady's purse. Cool find.

Some Interesting finds. The coin purse is a trip. I like the little three tongue buckle.

Nice finds and great photos ... sure wish that coin purse would've had a nice silver or two in it ~ Jimmy

You and me both, my friend. :)

Great recovery and cleaning on the purse, Buckleboy. It would have been pretty easy to destroy something that fragile during the dig. I'd be beating the surrounding ground to death!

Actually, it might be a clip for an old-fashioned ladies' garter belt. (The part that attaches to the stockings.) I've found one of these myself (I found a "Velvet Grip" variety) and did some research. Together with the change purse you've got yourself a real female presence there at your spot. Good stuff, because hey -- we've all got plenty of old farmer's suspender buckles. I'd prefer a relic from some gal's thighs any day. ;D

As for the key, maybe it has something to do with a clock? Just a guess.

Congrats on the great finds. You can't go wrong with a nice day of relics.

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Very interesting finds, sorry bout the purse- at least you got all the paper $ in it ::)

thanks

Looks like part of an old lantern -- the piece that held the wick.

Buckleboy, a relic kind of day eventually leads to a copper kind of day. You and the rest of the Iron Brigade's finds have been sparking my fever even more.

Now, go out and get one of those Spanish coins that read up in the "Dollar" range. :D

Yeah, I'd LOVE for this to be a Two-Buckle Year. ;D But either way, I agree with you about the change purse. Lots of craftsmanship involved. I don't see really how they could've made something like that by machine in those days.

Brendan,

I think you just might be right! It's a different design from the suspender clips. Thanks for the correction! And yes that item in the last photo is a piece from around a lantern wick.
