Hello Everyone,

Today I was working a new permission in an old part of town. The property has roots to the 1650’s, unfortunately the old home is gone (30 years ago) a new one in its place. The front, side and rear of the property yielded nothing of that vintage or for that matter old at all; only clad coins and a matchbox car! :dontknow: It was clear the dirt has been moved and much of the area had a lot of fill; at least that was what the owner said.:BangHead: So, I turned to the woods which appeared for the most part to be untouched. I was walking around with only silence in my ears. I started working every tree that appeared to have some age…only a few older shot gun shells. So I thought where would somebody sit in this area? I spotted a rock sticking out of the ground about four feet in height and fairly flat on the top. While working around the rock about three-quarters around I get a deep high tone.:icon_thumleft: I dig and dig until about 15 inches then pinpoint a round object at the bottom of the hole. It was definitely some type of jewelry or small coin bank (measured at home: dimensions of 3 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall). Upon extracting the object I could see that the top appeared to open, so I placed the fragile object into a plastic sandwich bag for a closer inspection at home. The rest of the woods yielded no keeper targets!

Upon arriving at home, I slowly opened the object and tooth picked the dirt carefully out of the container. The contents contained some jewelry, small gem stones and tiny shells. I will test the diamonds, but I am sure they are not real. The photos show the process of the find and its hidden treasure.

Thank you for looking!

Hello ANTIQUARIAN,

I cleaned the fragile container with a dry brush. The outside top has what looks like some blue paint. The inside appear to be gold plated, the under cover has a bit remaining. I am still trying to determine what the five multi-colored objects were used for with respect to the jewelry. I believe the jewelry is fairly old, but still trying to determine the colored pieces as they attached to the jewelry.

Regards,

Doc

Thanks for your response Professor.

The oval box you found everything in looks like a c1940s jewelry box from a dressing table. What's interesting is that it's made of iron and not brass. Most jewelry boxes or any box for that matter that was designed to be displayed wouldn't be made of a ferrous metal. Of course, it might just have been a cheap keepsake box designed for a child to play with.

I too noticed that the heart shaped brooch or pin with the glass rosette cut diamonds had some age to it by the style of the setting.
It's just one of those mysterious finds we make when detecting that we'll likely never get an answer to. :dontknow:

I have found several jewelry boxes over the years and all were empty. Congratulations on a superb find!:occasion14:

Neat that there were still things inside!

Probably some child’s treasure. Cool find
