Imagine if you will, In 1917, a young man sent hundreds of miles away from his family and friends to train for a war overseas.

Out in Texas summer heat, in a wooded area, training to dig ditches, construct temporary wooden buildings, learn how to use the telegraph, how to scout and make maps, and learn hand to hand combat. Taught how to fire large artilleray and small firearms the soldier also has weeks of marching drills, physical training and building bridges to contend with.

He gets a few days to rest before continuing the intense training, so he goes to the Supply Depot and buys a few post cards so he can send them to his family. Writing brief messages he then gets on his horse and rides to the camp post office to mail them. As he is getting off his horse and then tying it to the hitching post he doesn't realize he has dropped one of the dimes that was in his pocket.

90 years later:
A metal detector user who has done some research on the camp, and believes knows where a few of the buildings once stood, goes detecting in the area. After finding some old rusted nails, a few pieces of 2 inch long pipe, and some other junk objects, he detects this keeper. Possibly lost by a soldier from 90 years before.

( Used--White's M6 and 6X10 Eclipse coil, coin was found at a depth of 4 inches)

It was found by a professional detectorist, not some average dude with a detector.

Thanks everyone. I may not get as many finds as most who post, but I try to get some good ones once in awhile. :)

Dimeman, congrats on your Barber!

Speculating on why something is at a specific location or how it may have lost is always one of the mysterious joys of the hunt. Neat story!

Well written...

Well documented...

Well done! :)

Everyone who posts any finds at all, inspires someone else to go out and find whatever they can get out of the ground. Either a pulltab or an old coin from years ago,it is a thrill to pull it out of the ground. :) :)

Well after 2 or 3 pulltabs...THAT gets kind of boring......... :P :P

Well written Dimeman,
Superb find and recovery as well,

Not all posts are as inspiring as others, but this kind are the best.

Congrats , and good hunting
