Great save. Probably not common find in US. It is original helmet with luftwaffe decal. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:. It is worth some hundred dollars at least. They know more these in www.wehrmachtawards.com.

I did not notice any decal on it..

Did you see some?

Thanks

Blaze

Souvenir of the war probably. Note the hole on the back. Bullet hole? Might add to the value.

I was thinking souvenir too. Taken off some dead Nazi by the U.S. soldier that shot him.
Sounds good to me. :laughing7: Nice find

Looks very much like faded luftwaffe eagle. Can we have better pic? Thanks

Don't see why it wouldn't be authentic lying out in the woods like that, however the leather looks too good, again lying out in the woods like that. Honestly I don't have a clue. Pretty cool either way ???

Nice, the leather seems to be period as does the helmet design. Nice Find.

I agree with 'Aquila'; directly under the rivet hole is what appears to be an eagle with spread wings, similar to the original--a pic of a replica is shown here: http://www.german-helmets.com/Stahlhelm-Werke/indexb.htm
The design of the leather webbing is also consistant with images of the original found online.
The condition of the helmet (and leather) could be explained by a more recent deposit--after a period (of years) of the helmet being 'indoors'. I can envision a kid playing with then losing his dad's WW II souvenir.

Looks like a mid war M42 helmet to me. Markings are authentic, leather too. The hole in the back seems to be from a splinter. Good find! Keep it, originals become harder to find! :icon_thumleft: especially with markings like that. I wonder a little what things sound good for some people....shooting from behind is not exactly the thing to be proud of...

Should i treat the leather to moisten it up a bit :icon_scratch:

Im not gonna clean the helmet but i think the leather should be done..

Dont do anything to the shell, just a little acidfree oil to preserve it from rusting. For the leather You can use leatheroil for saddles. Let it soak and wipe exess oil. That will be enough. I used the Saddleoil for metal too and it worked ok.

thats freakin sweet man! wow maybe $500-$1,000k sweet!

Definitely looks to be an original m-42 luftwaffe helmet. I wouldn't touch it at all, the guys who collect them are big on "as found" condition. The eagle is a decal, and messing with it in any way could destroy it. There should be a size stamp inside the rim although I'm not certain that all of them were stamped. Definitely has a good value as is, in the 4-800$ range, possibly higher with the liner and chinstrap.

I'm sure some kid got in a lot of trouble for losing his dads souvenir.....
