Hi guys/girls

I upgraded from a Spectrum XLT/F2 combo to an AT Pro this season and have been doing way better. Absolutely loving the detector with the 5x8 coil. One question though...

I'm often tricked by deep signals. It seems that 75% of my deep signals turn out to be shallow pieces of foil or something that rings high and deep. Is there a way to tell if that's what it is? It sucks digging an 8" tall plug out when you think it's a deep coin only to end up tearing the plug to pieces to find a small piece of crap near the grass end.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Never had that problem with my ATPro. Foil on surface always shows 2" when pinpointed. As a matter of fact I've never had a detector pinpoint as accurately as the ATP does. Maybe somebody else can chime in.

Foil and canslaw are the scourge of the ATP. So many times it sounds good.

Here's my tip...If it scratches at all on tone, I skip it. (zinc pennies are an exception) If it sounds good but VDI jumps 10-20 numbers, I skip it!

I dig more pultabs & canslaw than I'd like because of good tone & VDI, but I also dig plenty of nickels, buttons, rings & other jewelry pieces.

As far as the shallow trash goes, learn to use your propointer (if you have one) before you dig. I always check with mine for near-surface junk, remove the junk and check the spot again.

I'd like to update this post with this:

I went to a new park today that wasn't completely loaded with trash, and found the depth meter to be really accurate with all of the deep signals. Maybe it has something to do with the park I usually hunt being absolutely packed with trash.

I agree, but where there's trash there's treasure.
I've been suprised many a time by broken tones.

I spent most of my day today digging extremely deep and scratchy signals and learned a lot about the AT Pro while finding some cool coins and things. Definitely a good thing!

Me too! For now I'm digging all targets! I have learned that it's the best way to learn your machine. I'd say I have put a little over 40 hours of use on my ATP and still learning! A week ago I found on the foot of this tree a small glass bottle which I broke while digging with like $1.20 in coins. The newest coin was from 1970's oldest was from the 1950's. But it was giving the best of signals but was ringing from the 60-77's. It was found at 8".

That is an incredibly cool looking tree! Thanks for posting :)

I get this with small bits of Iron that I "can make" a good signal for. But I usually can tell when i try to pinpoint it and it wont pin point to anything.

So if its saying its 8" deep, and you pinpoint it, and it isnt in the 6-8" range, its problally something over/under-sized...The Pinpoint depth is very accurate for me

Absolutely! if it has a VDI between 51-53 repeatable it is almost always a nickle... if it is in that range and bounces it is almost always NOT a nickle... I've dug a ton of holes around that range and that is what I have learned.
