got to talking to Jorge del Norte on this forum. We live pretty close, so we made plans to go out this morning. He took me to one of his spots. This is a children's bracelet and was found about 3 inches deep. It is stamped 14K MEX. This is my first good find that was not a clad coin, etc. I have only been at this since early November, so this is a rush!! I am enjoying this so much and am very grateful to Jorge for welcoming a newcomer to this hobby.

Nickels are tough to hear. My best suggestion is to start a small test plot. Scan it and remove all trash before hand. Get some help from people with different machines. A PI machine would be great. Once you know the area is clean, plant different type coins and objects at different depths. Mark each one with something (I use wooded golf tees) so you know what is where. Water it like a real garden for a few weeks before starting. The longer the stuff stays in the ground, the more "real" the signals. Use that to practice hearing what things sound like and how depth affects the sound. It's the only way I know to make sure you are picking up nickels and gold. You just keep at the adjustments until you can hear them and then tweek for depth. It's work but it will pay off. A "cheap" place to get some silver coins (and gold if you can afford it) for the garden is a pawn shop or other place that buys coins for the metal. They have lots of "slickies" or foreign coins for not much more than the metal content.

Hope this helps.

BioProfessor thanks for the input.. a coin garden sounds pretty cool.

Don't forget the other good stuff - rings, chains (they are really tough), etc. Put as many different kinds of things as you can think of that might be in your area. Put trash in there too. You can compare foil, to nickel, to pulltab, etc. Before I went to the UK, I bought some MD field finds from the UK for a "special" UK garden. Research isn't the only work that pays off.

Awesome find! To find gold after only a month or two is great. Keep up the good work.

my lil ace 250 pinged it first gold a mex 625 kiddie ring recently

Benc2, i use my detector in custom mode only.
That way i can eliminate unwanted trash and it saves my settings.

I have everything to the left of a dime except the nickel eliminated.

Usually the scale will jump to the left and right of the nickel on slow swings which alerts me to a pull tab or can. (Which by the way i still dig my share of :-\)
When i find an 1981 and before copper penny it shows up as a dime fluctuating into the copper range with each swing. (this mode also brings me much lead)
Because of so much junk in the ground i move my body 45 degrees and swing the same area to try to achieve the same readings, and then move back to my original position to verify the type of metal.
If the detector cannot make up it`s mind as to what it is or it`s depth i pass it on or change my batteries :)

Good luck and you can also check the link on traesurenet.com about metal detectors and the Ace 250
or send me a private message via e-mail.
