Added two more 1600's Coins to the collection!! Today's Finds from the Deep!

Well - deep as in 4' - but was still a great day out on the water.

I managed to get out for a few short hours this morning to check a new site out that I thought would have some promise. I immediately began hunting a particularly good looking site as I heard a little iron and saw a few items that caught my eye (can't give all the secrets away). It actually started out very slow but when it picked up, it picked up!

After about an hour with not much to show, I wandered back over to my my gear on the bank when I heard a nice high tone that seemed the right size and depth to be modern or junk. I actually was thinking a large copper coin - you can imagine my surprise when the a 1 reale cob (1650's strike) was staring back at me. You can even imagine my surprise more so when I checked the bottom and heard another tone in the same spot. This time it was a 1690 1 reale cob!

I immediately slowed down and began to check this particular area out with great care. Three nice early buttons surfaced, along with a civil war era Spencer carbine. I was on the bottom working a little ledge when I heard another LARGE and interesting target. I would say it was an early shotgun shell (paper) that was dropped as the hole was full of lead shot, however I did not locate a casing. I suspect it was early shot, but much earlier than a center-fire shotgun as there must be close to a few hundred in one spot - I will head back and get them all out when I have time. For today, I simply did not have the time on my side and I was too eager to look for more cobs. They cleaned up nicely too after a short charge and solution bath.

So far this year I have scored a keeper coin on each trip to the water - I will take two 1600's Spanish cobs in one day and be quite content.

HH

Dan

Awesome finds! Congrats!

Wandering back to get your stuff must be the same as "on the way back to the vehicle!" :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumright:

What a day Dan! Congrats on the killer coins.

Ha! not exactly - was wandering back to get my gear on the bank and move on to check another portion out up stream or down stream (I did not know yet - all I knew was that I was not too happy with the spot at that point - until I hit those beauties)

Very nice indeed!

Great finds Dan! Love em!

Congradulation on the 2 Cobs. I'm only finding things from the 1700-1800 on the Beach- goldnugget

Thanks nugget - this was technically a beach find...though I don't suspect I will be finding any bikini wearers around those parts...I did see a nice size water moccasin though

Hi Dan, very nice cobs there! Hope to find one some day!

Holy smokes Dan, I missed this post. That is just crazy, 2 x 1600's Spanish coins in one hunt. That's the thing dreams are made of. Congrats, they really look great.
Looks like we may get side swiped by a hurricane in a day or two so if I were you I would make plans to hit that site as soon after this storm passes. Good luck Dan looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Not only 2 cobs in one day, but two in one hole.......AWESOME !

I'm regrettably late on acknowledging such great finds. Not one, but two cobs on a single trip. Dan the Man - You're making it look easy to find 17th century cobs! :headbang: Go get some more!

Not sure how I missed this one Dan. You are having one heck of water season and I look forward to more of your posts!
