montana #2 017.webp My dad was an avid hunter, he found this pipe about 40 years ago. It was under a cliff in a remote part of Eastern Ky. Any ideas?

Pretty neat! More photos showing the overall shape will help in determining its age and origin.

Sure that's not a representation of a "Forest Wildman"?

Below is a website with great information and photos of clay pipes. This site shows figural head pipe bowls, and this one is Charles Dickens, a Negro, and a Sailor, which were made circa 1860 to 1920. Your pipe bowl looks more Native African than slave African.

Cough. Might be better nouns available somewhere here.

Oh, I'm sure Charles Dickens doesn't matter if we use his name. :) If you go to the website I posted, you'll see I'm making a direct quote.

Thanks for the input and welcome.
I'm excited to find this site. I inherited my dad's treasure hunting gene, I just got back from a trip to Montana/Wyoming hunting for Forrest Fenns treasure.

Looks like you found this site a few years ago, you just need to visit more often, lol. Now about those extra photos... not to mention the answer to the question... is it clay or some other material?

You may very well have a Mississippian era Native American effigy pipe. I would take it to a local expert for a positive identification. Sub 8-)

I don't think it resembles a black man, only the thick lips but that thick brow is a Neanderthal trate not Africa, may be Polynesian but that just a guess.

Hi mcl.
It was acceptable to use the word negro back when Charles Dickerson was alive. But that's JMO. I have a GGGG Grandmother who was a slave set free in the 1700`s. My GGGG Grandfather was from France and came here. He recived a Spanish Land grant around 1764, and my family still has the land in an Estate in Grand Prairie LA.

But I'm going on 60 and the word negro never botheted me like the N word did, you say that and it is like calling my mother out of her name.

Most anthropologist recognize 3 races of humans: Caucasian, Negroid, and Mongolian. Throughout history people have adopted what they 'want' to be called whether it be African-American, White, Latino, Asian, etc. BUT it will always be correct to categorize the human race as: Caucasian, Negroid, Mongolian.

I look forward to seeing more photos of this great pipe bowl.
