I found this button at about 8" on a site that is supposed to be colonial. Is there anyway to tell how old a button is with no backstamp information. I have no experience with colonial era buttons.

Thanks for the help.

The back looks almost like it was a cast button.. sand maybe?? All the little bumps are raised?? That alone would make me think it was early...

My money is on the 18th century for a date for your button. Could be early 19th. It is most certainly old-- looks like the same style of shank attachment as contemporaneous flat buttons.

well the type of manufacture varies over time -- flat type buttons -- are earlier time (1750 to 1830) frame for the most part --- around 1830 & later two piece type bottons with a molded front "pressed" onto flat base back were more popular -- this is of course a very rough rule of thumb .

Here is a close-up of the edge detail. Some have said this might help.

Thanks,

Daryl
