yes, you can detect BLM land.

As for "any luck there?", you're in a very remote part of the state. So not likely to find too many md'rs out there. A guy I know from Ridgecrest has travelled around in those remote areas, and found barbers, IH's, and even a $5 gold. But by and large very sparsely used and populated, relatively speaking, in that whole area.

That area (west of Lone Pine) was heavily used as the backdrop for the western movies of the 40s, 50s and 60s.
No doubt a lot was dropped near those movie 'camps'--if you can find them.
