So, I finally had a day off where the sun was a-shin'n and I gained permission on a property that is on my oldest pre-civil war map.

It didn't help that the homeowner was literally mowing her lawn around me as I swung, but I had high hopes...

As I was about to give up and look for treasure a the local bar instead... out popped President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

One year older, and it would have been a Merc.... COME ON!!!!!! :tongue3:

That's exciting. If you find a Rosie and wheaties, there is certainly more to follow. It might mean you have a virgin site there. Slow down and dig those soft iffy signals, and let us know what you come up with. Good luck!

Hey, I just did an old home that I must have driven by a dozen and a half times before I finally saw a vehicle there. The fellow immediately said yes. I had very high hopes since I had gotten multiple silvers at every other house in the neighborhood I had done. When I left I had a little clad, a modern key, a plastic sheep that was with the key and a homemade fishing sinker that was molded in a spoon for use in the river. I was so sure there would be silvers or at the very least some wheats.

I know the feeling. Sometimes I work to get a permission to hunt a site only to find it's either been hunted before, filled with trash or has been resurfaced. It's very disappointing. At least you plucked a piece of silver.

Im kind a wondering how my odds will be today, I have permission to do a home site of a Rev. War soldier. dates back to the 1790s. a farm, pasture and other fields. ill just go slow and hope for the best, but we have all been in your shoes on one hunt or another only to have our hopes dwindle on every hit. lol. nice rosie tho.

I worked on getting the oldest corner in my town, 1850s, for about 2 weeks, calling different people and whatnot. I couldn't sleep the night before! One clad dime, 5 copper Lincolns.

Wait for a really good saturating rain and then go dig all the deeper signals.

You never know. I've sometimes gone to some pretty promising places, only to pull a Wheat or two.

Thanks for all the reassurance that finding the Rosie was not the worst thing ever.

I guess I'm convinced that a lot of the hobby is truly luck. BUT, you can greatly increase your chances of getting lucky by at least starting on sites that you know are old, and especially ones that are hard to get permission for.

All winter I drooled over a long gone pioneer town that is now a rural trout fishing destination. It had three sites on it. I figured heck, if it was a town for 50 years, and every year someone lost ONE coin.. (yep, just ONE coin), then there should be 50 coins out there. After combing the three sites (flat, lovely plowed fields) I found a toasted Indian Head that must have been sprayed by Ammonia Anhydrous.

That's what makes finding a great coin SO GREAT... after all the hard work.

As Babe Ruth said: "It's hard to stop a person who never gives up".

Good luck out there everyone!
