All tone and Disc signal fusion...

Sorry about the title but, I'm an engineer/geek and that's how we talk.

One aspect of MDing I don't see mentioned very often is how or if people use All Tone and Disc modes together while they search. Let me try and explain by describing my current technique (using a Tejon). The basic idea assumes you're not looking for iron relics and could be applied to most MDs.

1) Search for targets with the true All Metal mode (i.e. constant background hum; I prefer VCO over fixed tone [comments welcome]).
2) Given target in All Metal mode, switch to Disc1 "all metal" (i.e. Silent Search but, no discrimination).
3) If no beep in Disc1 "all metal", dig and hope for the best. This is a target that didn't exceed the Disc1 strength threshold.
3) If strong beep in Disc1 "all metal", switch to Disc2 set to eliminate iron to foil (between foil and nickel).
4) If no beep, move on it's junk.
5) If strong beep, dig. It could be lead, gold, silver, copper, brass, etc.

What do you think?

I got the Tejon because it didn't have TID or a display screen and am very happy with it. Do these options make the above sequence unnecessary? Does anyone have an alternative logic sequence they like?

I might do something like that on the wide open beach, where targets are spread around, and I want that "umph edge" to the depth, but what you're saying would drive a person mad in a target rich environment. Ie.: you'd be stopping to check each signal in multiple ways, 5 times per each step. Better just to swing in disc. mode, in those cases, IMHO.

Tom is right. It is entertaining to say the least, but time is everything where second guessing the detector can slow you down from swinging over a good target that the Disc. mode will respond to.
