Hi all. I'm hoping to find any information as to the possible history of this ring. Incidentally this is also my very first ring so that is super awesome. It was found on a known civil war camp site in Southeast Louisiana which also was a plantation site. It is a signet ring and the inscription reads TIMOR DOMINI FONS VITAE (mirrored) and has what looks to be a falcon atop 3 ostrich feathers. No hallmarks but it is definitely gold. Not sure of the stone itself. Searching online has not provided much in the way of information. Thanks

Sorry Red-Coat but after rereading this post three times I find no Latin to English translation. Also correct me if I'm wrong but there was no mention to Proverbs 14:27. I don't mind eating crow but could you please refer me to your comment.
Thanks much appreciated

No worries.

Post #2 on page 1 of this thread first gives the translation. Post #8 on the same page reaffirms it and provides the biblical reference.

Note that the thread has three pages, which is why we're now up to post #42

Easy to miss that sometimes... especially since the opening post still appears at the top of this page.

So sorry Red-Coat I guess I'll take that crow with a grain of salt. Ment nothing by this post and nothing wrong with being wrong but I sure was. Please forgive my ignorance but did't see the first page.
I'll pay closer attention

Love that ring! Bet it was fun to find!

As I said... no worries. It's easy to miss since the opening post (post #1) appears at the top of this page, followed by post #41

Small update. I was finally able to sit and talk to the author of the book that relevantchair linked and he does not believe it's linked to his butlers so the search continues. I did however get information that there is a Butler society which is an organization of ALL the Butler families in the states so I will try my luck with them. Not giving up yet! If I do find any more info and am able to actually track down the rings heritage I will make a separate post so as not to bump this one again. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the update. I think it would be good to keep adding to this thread rather than making a new one if you unearth anything more

such a great save, your next ring will probably be a little ho-hum. Well done indeed. Thanks for posting and thanks Red Coat!

Agreed, no issue bumping an old post with an update.
