These have me stumped. I can see cutting the neck off a broken bottle and using it as a vase or something of that nature but a local antique shop has several of these highly collectible amber straight side Coke bottles with the necks cleanly sawn off for sale cheap. $10 each.. Any thoughts on why someone would do this ? There are mostly Bristol & Johnson City TN bottles which would be $200-$400 bottles if intact.

This is for repairs! If someone has the neck only they can buy this body and use some epoxy or whatever to put 'er back together.

The tops were likely broken so they were sawed off to keep from getting cut by the sharp edges. Just my opinion

Exactly....

Went back today & bought one just because... For $10 bucks it will make a fine pencil holder for my desk. It will look good beside the Jaguar V12 distributor cap I use for pens..

By sawing these broken tops off, the bottle still has some value vs being thrown in the recycle bin. I have one I sawed off as well. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1484533157.886822.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1484533180.339229.webp

I have a friend who found a few broken local hobbleskirts and had them cut down and rim polished for shot glasses. They are pretty neat but only the bottom/base is the cool spot and nobody sees it unless you're downing a shot.

Here is my $250-300 pencil holder when whole, luckily I obtained a whole example a year or two later...

Thanks, found with other bottles by a local excavator in Paterson, it had an entire thick root in it from the base to the top, took about 4 months of chemical combinations to dissolve it all without hurting the glass...

What did you use? Acid?

I used different root destroyer chemicals and some other stuff I had lying around the house that I knew wouldn't harm glass, it was extremely stubborn...
