Also not sure on the demononation as that is where it has been drilled through ( probably killing any possible value!)

Hard to tell from the photo - can you post one of the reverse side? If real coin, it's a $2.50. A jeweller could test it for gold content for you. A $2.50 coin would be 18.00 millimeters and weight 4.18 grams,

Lovely gold coin! Glad you found it, must be interesting history behind that coin's travels! If only coins could speak! HH Andi

To bad someone was stupid enough to drill a hole in it instead of buying a bezal for it,If its the size of an american nickle its a five dollar goldie and if smaller its a 250 or two and a half dollar coin. Hope its real,
Awesome find, You could buy an acid test kit for sixteen dollars, the coin should bee 22 karet. Happy hunting.:icon_thumleft:

Here is the reverse. Its abit more worn on the back but right where the hole is i can make out a 2. Would a acid test damage it any? It weighs 4.1 grams although my scales aint the best. It was only about an inch and a half down! If its real it is the second gold find ive ever had

Looks like a 2 1/2.

The softness of the cast/strike or maybe its ware worries me a little:icon_scratch: What does the edge look like?

I honestly wouldnt know to be honest. Ive never actually seen one before

I'm not sure either, never held one. It just looks a little wrong, but might be fine. Does it have a seam around the edge or totally smooth? (also, some coin like jewelry is still made of Gold)

The edge should be reeded- The weight seems to be right - but as Cru mentioned this could well be a "coin jewelry" piece . An
acid test -would at least give you the purity of the gold (as it's already drilled - no harm in it ) Argentium.

Totally smooth mate. It looks gold just down to how easy and good it cleaned up. Wish i had another to compare it with

The drill hole is also badly done. Not a clean hole

If the reverse looks like that in person and it's not just the pic, I would have to think it's plated brass. Just too sloppy to be gold. Have you handled gold coins at all? There is an obvious difference in the weight compared to other coins, enough that you can quite easily feel the difference.

Do the acid test to know for sure, should test 22 karet, Hope its real, great find for over there, would like some day to visit over there and bring my detector to look for romans or hammered coins.:icon_thumleft:

Yea,if the edge isnt reeded I would be highly suspect.
One must realize that many coins of the "Early",days(by our standards)were holed, the coin was worth $2.50,back,nothing more, and was probably a guarantee it wouldnt be lost.....till somebody put it on a chain!

Its good fun detecting over here. I have been living in america for the last few years and just recently moved back. I really dont find much clad out here as i did in america but found a fair few old coins. For sure worth the trip. I love in a coastal town to so i have 3 beaches to choose from and alot of grass also
