On one occasion Burdell was seen in Trinity Cburch graveyard at 5 o'clock in the morning, and attracted the attention of the policeman on that lonely post. He concealed himself behind a telegraph pole and watched the mysterious visitor in the abode of the dead.

They must have had bigger poles and smaller policemen back then...

It was a joke. Today's policemen (even the ones who are in shape) wouldn't be able to hide very well behind a telephone pole.
