Went out to my civil war era site and stumbled across another 2 cent coin. I was moving at about the speed of smell thinking about how I was about to the point where the site is probably getting hunted out. I was just hoping to catch a round ball or a non iron item. This one was a very quiet but clean signal. I think at normal pace I’ve probably blown right past it many times just thinking I was getting a little background chatter.

It was really really crusty but I could see sharp detail in just a few areas. Andres pencil and a toothpick didn’t put much of a dent in it so I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide over night and today I’ve worked it over with the toothpick and Andres pencils, im pretty happy with the results but I’ll probably stop here i don’t want to over clean
It was funny how the first 3 numbers eventually came out clean

It’s an 1864 two cent piece and the 5th coin from that spot clustered right around late 1860’s I have the pics at a bit of an angle, straight on details get lost in all the different colors and direct light

I gave it a little soak in rem oil and was letting it dry, not the true colors but took a head on in the sun… it still has crud but I don’t want to take the patina off the high spots to get the crevices clean

Well done getting another 2 cent. Kind of strange that there's so many at this site.

Perseverance and patience pays with an excellent save and restoration! Sometimes it hard to say when a site is really hunted out for your equipment and expertise. Just when you think it is, you give it another go. Lately I've been keeping notes about the settings, coils, swings, and finds - then think about what went well and not so well. Then look for areas to improve. May your success continue!

Yeah I’ve been playing with different settings and screens. This was the xp deus with the tekkna program. I was making very slow passes which I think is a definite upgrade over my old machines that didn’t respond well to slow swings. I tried deep hc and the xy screen in another spot and it was a foil and aluminum trash magnet, that’s probably not a combo I’ll go to often

I’ve been wondering about that too, two cent pieces and shield nickels. No pennies, no dimes, no quarters… are they not there or am i missing the signals… the big challenge is the iron chatter from a ton of square nails and scrap iron.

Great Find :) Congratulations !!!

I'm working a similar site, except instead of two cent pieces, I've found large cents. Some were in the same hole w/ 3-4 iron nails, so I got an iffy signal, even using the smallest coil (4"x6"). While compared to larger coils some depth is lost, the small coil makes up for it when an area is full of debris. Consider doing that when you return. Good luck!

When I find several small denomination coins in an area near or in a foundation, I picture Mom's change jar on the kitchen windowsill that go left behind when the family left and the house fell down later, leaving the coins in the soil. But who really knows?

I actually know of one place where that actually happened. I hunted the site but never found anything. I'm guessing someone found and removed it later.

I think of a button spill the same way.

Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

Very nice coin And it is even more amazing that you found other coins from the same time period in the same location And no disrespect to the coin itself But the cleaning and restoration is more impressive than the coin Of course I have only ever found one coin so what do I KNOW ???? Either wqy a nice item to have rescured and restored
