Howdy y'all,

Brother John and I hit the site where we've uncovered silver and 3 CW buttons again. Today I plucked out this strange lookin' buckle and dropped it in my hip pouch with the trash. It wasn't till around lunch time when we where gettin' ready to leave and Brother and I were showing a few things we'd found. Then I said I did find this one odd buckle and pulled it out. I didn't know I had a good one. His eyes got big and he immediately Identified it as a Union carbine sling buckle. Definitely Civil War he said, and then he called me a name or two. ;D He has been turning me on to the study of CW relics and I'm enjoying a whole new area of detecting. Thanks Bro. The old compact is cool, I sure thought it had coins in it when we first opened it, but not so. It was a very fun day. The one curved piece of steel with the holes is the same as the Texan connection found on the Medina hunt. I actually found it at this site a week or so ago. He and I neither one know for sure what it is. Do you?

Thanks Yall

Ya know, not long ago after about three hard trips relic hunting without anything worth showing I thought to myself. I am not a relic hunter. We'll once Brother John got us into this recent site and I started pluckin' some things out that really caught my interest. I must say. I DO Like relic hunting. ;) :D ;D Still love coin shootin' too.

I hear ya Kirk. I started detecting on playgrounds, but once I dug up my first CW bullet at a farm site I was hooked on old relics as you can see. ;D Good luck to you and your Bro on future hunts.

Hey KIrk....That is an awesome find!!I found one last year, what are the marking's on it?Nice "relic"....Congrat's!!

Well, I think any markings would be on the back, but all I've done is was it with a soft toothbrush and water. Do they all have markings?

I'm sure there's a few out there without any marking's Kirk. The one I found was made in Mass. The Confederate version's were pretty crudely made but are more rarer.Don't dig these everyday....Congrat's!!

Man, your's is in really fine shape. Mine is in good shape other than a bend. I have looked with a magnifying glass but haven't spotted writing yet. There is a good bit of the patina build up however. I read on one relic site today, that, the confederate ones are smaller than the union. I plan to borrow my brothers mm- measure to get the specifics on it. Is yours the confederate or a union?

That little coin holder thing is cool, I bet it was a wallet or something for coins and folding money.

Hey Texan Connection

Yip, there were a brief few moments of extreme anticipation opening it to see what was inside. At first glance It sure did look like a couple coins in the holders, but they were just the pieces that the coins sit on.
Hey, i told you I found one of those things you did :D

Mine measure's 52 by 82mm but they have some big 50 by 85mm Confederate one's.....Pretty sure this one's Union ;)

Thanks for the info Bro. I've rubbed a little more with brush and water but still don't see any writing. Should I try to clean it more and if so what can i use for the best method without harming the original condition?

excellent finds I am in awe at what you have dug. Dude your a fine MDer

Looks like a carbine sling buckle to me. Not a common find at all. Nice digs and WELL DONE!

Regards,

Buckleboy
