Another Colonial Silver Cufflink & Large Copper: 2011 Picks Up Where 2010 Ended!

The weather finally broke here in the Mid-Atlantic, and the timing was right to return to my favorite site...or so I thought! Even though it got into the 60's yesterday, I was surprised to find much of the site was still covered by more than 4 inches of snow! I found some bare spots to detect and got a good signal, only to find that the ground was frozen solid. :( It was even too much for my relic pro to handle, so I marked the spot and returned today, hoping that last nights mild overnight temps would thaw out the ground. Luckily I was right!

I returned to the site with my buddy Dale today, and found the spot I had marked. I dug a plug in the softened ground and nearly fell over when I saw ANOTHER gleaming silver colonial era cufflink! At first I thought I found the match to the cufflinks found on my last outing back in mid-December (http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,370249.0.html), but Dale pointed out that the design was different. I guess lightning does strike twice!

These are in even better shape and are a bit smaller than the first ones I found back in December. Below is a picture with its cousin.

I went on to find some nice buttons (one is backmarked LEAVENWORTH & CO., the others need more cleaning). I also dug a beat up early Cornet Large Cent that came in sounding more like an Indian Head Cent ???, a part of a pewter spoon, two bird bands (I found the ID on one; still searching for the other), and the "whatizzit" on the bottom. It is a thin piece of copper and appears to be intact. Any ideas?

Those cufflinks are beautiful, Neil! The daffys are finally just now coming up here. It's been a tough winter all over. If it wasn't snowing, it was raining. :P Really like the LC too. Congrats on all those super finds!

Nana :)

Terrific find. If you wear dress shirts for any reason, get a shirt with French Cuffs. You have a great pair of cuff links and a cool back-story for those people interested.

I was there with Neil that day... here is how it went down....

After parking the cars and walking to the spot, I realized I had forgotten my pinpointer in my vehicle. I went back to get it. 5 minutes later I return and Neil says "Come here and hold out your hand." I held out my hand and he said "Now close your eyes". I closed them and he plopped something into my hand. Opening my eyes, I moved my head in to look closer and OMG! Another set of cufflinks!! Right away I noticed the shape and size were the same as the others he found, but the design was slightly different. Amazing!!

Good job Neil. Amazing find!

Here is a pic that I took of Neil holding them, fresh from the earth!

Wow Neil they are beauts! Had a good time out there with you today ended up with 9 buttons but no silver cuff links :P Hope to get out again soon. :icon_thumleft: BTW that is a Banner find. How many silver cufflinks has the memebers on this forum found? :icon_scratch:

Re: Another Colonial Silver Cufflink & Large Copper: 2011 Picks Up Where 2010 Ended!

Beautiful silver cufflinks. Neil, I believe the cufflinks are engraved with the likeness of a dogwood flower. This species of the dogwood is native to our side of the pond, and must have been just as popular with the early Americans as they are today. As an ex-horticulture teacher I find your cufflinks to be particularly fascinating! You just gotta love this hobby. Steve

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the replies. It was a great find. It took four years of detecting the field to find the first set, and only 6 weeks to find the second set.

I hope Don is right the mates to these may be waiting to be dug!
