I went yesterday before the rain for a quick hunt in a new field and found what at first I thought was a copper coin. Turns out to be what I think is a very large copper button, it has a floral design on the front of it. It was pretty bent and I managed to straighten it pretty good.

I went early today back to the hayfield for a long slow random walk. The wind was blowing steady 40 mph with gust over 50 mph I was bundled up with my winter gear. I found the two buttons and not finding much after three hours, I was on a long squiggly walk back to the truck from the far side of the field. When I got about twenty yards away from the truck I found the harmonica reed piece and then three steps from that I got a good 94-95 signal telling me it was about 6 inches down. I popped the plug and seen what I figured was a Half Cent. I put it in the safe pocket and left. I slowly cleaned and am still in the slow clean process. It looks like I'm seeing 1754 on it, it measures 25 mm and weighs 7 grams. I was trying to find a pic of a early farthing, bust facing right, but I can't find anything. Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy the pix

Brad

No help here Treb..but congrats on the awesome finds! I'm also interested in the i.d. Ddf

Ya know, it almost doesn't matter what it is, it's such a fun item to find.
Congrats on a fine walk!

You have a George I Halfpenny. So 1724, not 54.

Could also be George III, those have a right facing bust (1770-1806). Interesting edge though, i've never seen a George that has such a thick edge.

Congratualtions on the nice hunt! I believe "Iron Patch" has it correctly ID'ed, he is indeed the expert. :occasion14:

Great finds - I wish that I had a hayfield like that! :icon_thumleft:

Wow... coolio... um... that HP looks like it is "deflated" or "melted in"... heh

Cool finds. WD.

Kg1 with thick edge congrats on your finds

Great hunt Brad :icon_thumright: That KG rim almost looks hammered to me. I found this LC last spring that someone had beat around the edge and squished the rim.

Might it not be a Connecticut Copper?

Congrats on those sweet finds, no matter the ID Brad.

Thank you, it has been very good to me and a few others, I really believe there is so much more to be found there.

You could be right Brad, I too have found a few coins that the edges were hammered for some reason, one of them was a 40's Walking Liberty Half
I think this copper was hammered also, I was first thinking that when I first started cleaning it, midway through I was getting worried there might not be any detail left, a smooth coin with a hammered edge. I have to go look at TrapperArt's pic and see what that is about. Although I have found many thin KG's I have found some thick ones also.

Might it not be a Connecticut Copper?
I don't think so, you would see conn where you can see NIA

Congrats on those sweet finds, no matter the ID Brad.
Thanks buddy

The good, bad and the ugly with finding old coppers. I love finding old coppers for the simple fact, they're old.
Most my old coppers are toast but, still know they're older then any wheat or Indian I'll ever dig. Lol
Hope you can get a positive ID, if not it's still a Great find, Congrats!!

Thanks deershed, I was just looking at it out of it's bath, I can almost see a full date the last two numbers are trying to hide. I can actually see the first two clear as day with my loop and with my loop it now looks like a 7 is the last number. I'm not sure if it is still gunk there or porous old copper. I'm going with Iron Patch's ID, make more sense because it allows for the extra rolled up edge. I seen last night from clicking on an example of a "hammered King George I half penny" on ebay There seems to be alot of "hammered" coins for sale I was unaware until looking for a pic for an example of what my coin should look like. It'll be nice going back there on future hunts to find that early silver I know has to be hiding there.

Very nice digs brad!
