I found another large cent today! It is too rough to make out the date and I'm too afraid to scrub it. It is my 6th on the year if my 1917 Canadian large cent counts. I think the large cent is a Coronet style. I had two Indian Head pennies, an 1864 12% nickel and I can't make out the other (too much patina). The 1864 came up on my E-Trac as 12-20, and it is the same basic color as nickels that come out of the ground. The 1937 Buffalo nickel was left in pouch from a hunt the other day. I only had one Wheat penny, a 1944. The ring came up as copper and has some blue glitter stuff on the side, definitely a kids ring.
The large cent was at least 10" down under a layer of rocks in some hard clay. The E-Trac was in two tone ferrous mode and had no problems in the trashy stuff where I was. I had been over the area several times before but not in two tone ferrous (ttf) mode. I just might have to hit this area tomorrow morning since I took the day off of work!

Here is a closer picture of the large cent's date. I can't make it out but if anyone can that would be awesome!

There's something about the soil here in Pa.....it just doesn't like copper. I have only found one that had a date you could read, and the rest of the coin was toast, lol! I thought for a second you had a three legged Buff but then saw the 4th. Nice finds, Gd:icon_thumright:

Great finds, date on a buff is a home-run. Now this is just me, if I found that LC I'd try a hot peroxide bath, toothpick and mineral oil. You may or may not come up with a date, It's hard to say not holding it in my hand and being able to see what is dirt and what is corrosion. The way I always look at it is how much could it be worth in the shape it's in right now? I have about five blank disc, sometimes the corrosion wins.

Nice bunch of old coins! Definitely search that place some more!

I have a toasted LC as well it may have 17.. As the first two numbers...maybe.
If your going to keep it no matter what, you could try cleaning it a little , you can't read it as is.

I couldn't make anything out with the Large Cent, so I tried cleaning it. I know, it's a bad thing to do but in reality the coin is toast. I'm just trying to identify what variety it is. It seems that that may even be impossible. But I do have to say that I have spent more time with this coin than I think I have with any other coin. So there is value in finding something like this to me.

You should definitely put that in peroxide for a while. Can't make it any worse. Its unfortunate that the big copper coins come out of the ground like that sometimes but if you're hunting the right sites eventually you'll recover one that looks better than that. The coppers that you can't ID are bittersweet to find. You know you've got an oldie but you just don't know how old. Judging by the color of your 1864 IH you've got the copper/nickel version (as opposed to the bronze version) that was the year they switched over the composition of the IHs. The bronze ones hold up a lot better in the ground. Nice finds!
