One of my teller friends called me up and asked how to tell if old $50s were real. They said they were all from 1988 and two of them had asterisks at the ends of the serial numbers. I explained over the phone how to determine the validity of pre-1990 currency and explained what the stars were and that the notes were presumably fine. Needless to say I also came by and picked up the star notes
