Don't need any more proof than that how the plow can damage or destroy things. I've never found a complete one either.

Because these came off of their shoes in the mud.

I'd say more caught on low branches or who knows whatever else, at least here. Back in the day there was a much higher % of uncleared land than cleared, and I'm sure it had to be rough going at times.
