Yesterday was family shopping day but I rushed the wife so that I could spend the last hour of light on the hill where I found the 17th century tobmac buckle a couple weeks ago. I found plenty of scraps that I missed the last time I was here and I also found another old buckle. This one too dates 1660-1720. As seen in the pictures the buckle chape is still intact! This is rare considering that it's iron and has been in the ground for 300 years. I'm starting to become a "buckle guy"...oh well, there are worse things to be!

Haven't gone to bed yet. One of my staff called in sick 2 hours before shift and I wasn't able to fill it...so guess who's working his first night shift in 4 years!

This buckle has an awesome green patina under the crust...going to soak it in some HP to bring that out.

Re: Another OLD Shoe Buckle!

Nice buckle Romeo,I've found pieces of that type had more serrated edges then yours does. But what got me about them was how sharp the edges were. :o You could use that baby for a steak knife. :laughing7: I would think they scraped some knuckles on it adjusting them. Also looks like it would have dug in the top of the foot before long.Crazy design to me.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Nice one for sure.

Nothing wrong with being a "buckle guy" at all.

You're probably thinking the same thing, would have been nice if the other little bit had been there as well.

Yeah, I was thinking that...of course!

Fine looking buckle there Romeo. You are really buckling down here lately :icon_pirat:

Great early buckle! I'd love to see a photo of it after the HP soak.

Cheers,

NICE! I thought I was looking at a jade buckle :headbang:

Yeah, I almost wish that the iron chape wasn't there...it kind of detracts from the appearance.

Not to mention you have to seal it or it might leach into the frame.

Seal the iron? With what?

Clear lacquer would do it. Just paint it on and wipe right away to make the coat super thin, and maybe so it's not quite as shiny. (hard to get away from it though) Maybe do it twice just to make sure it's covered well. No need to touch the frame.

Renaissance wax would leave it looking more as it is right now. But you'd have to keep an eye on it as i don't trust wax as much on iron.

Looks good, nice color, and even.

Might do a bit more cleaning before year end pics. myself.
